Match the replacement to the fuel and installation
A gas storage heater uses a burner to heat water held in a tank. Choosing a replacement involves capacity and recovery needs as well as the equipment’s fuel, venting and power requirements.
- Natural gas or propane: identify the existing supply and choose equipment specified for that fuel. Share the model label if available.
- Venting: atmospheric, power-vent and direct-vent designs have different requirements. The existing vent is not automatically suitable for another model.
- Electrical power: some gas heaters use powered blowers or controls. We check the requirements of the particular model.
- Size and access: consider hot-water demand, the heater’s dimensions and the route for removing and replacing it.
A similar replacement or a change of system?
A replacement may use the same general heater type, but the specific model and installation still need review. Changing fuel, vent design, heater location or equipment type can change the work involved.

Gas water heater questions
Does the new heater have to use the same fuel?
Tell us whether your supply is natural gas or propane. A change of fuel is a separate project question, not something to assume when choosing a replacement.
Can the existing vent be reused?
That needs assessment against the replacement model’s instructions and the existing installation. Vent configuration and materials vary between heater designs.
Will a gas water heater work without electricity?
It depends on the model. A heater with an electric vent blower needs power for that component. We’ll check the requirements of the equipment being considered.
How often should my gas water heater be serviced?
Follow the specific manufacturer’s maintenance guidance. Call WHE with the model and service history to discuss appropriate maintenance.
