A residential 80-gallon option: Voltex hybrid

A.O. Smith currently lists the Voltex AL HPTS-80 210 as an 80-gallon residential hybrid electric water heater. It combines heat pump technology with electric heating elements and has a manufacturer-listed 95-gallon first-hour rating. That rating helps compare hot-water delivery; it is different from the tank’s nominal size.

A hybrid needs a suitable location with airflow, condensate drainage and service access. We review those requirements alongside your electrical supply. Learn more about hybrid / heat pump installation.

How light-service commercial models differ

A.O. Smith also lists the LTE-80 light-service commercial family for commercial applications with intermittent hot-water demand. These are separate products from residential Voltex hybrids. Their electrical configurations and warranty terms require an exact model check. An “80-gallon” description alone does not establish that a commercial unit is a suitable replacement for your home.

What we check before recommending a replacement

  • Current equipment: A clear model-label photo identifies the heater and its electrical ratings.
  • Hot-water demand: Tell us about overlapping showers, large tubs and when the current system falls short.
  • Installation fit: We review access, dimensions, electrical supply, plumbing and drainage. For a hybrid, we also check airflow and room conditions.

A smaller tank or a different system may suit some homes, but we compare delivery and recovery before recommending a change. See our 80-gallon replacement options guide and A.O. Smith installation page for related guidance.

A.O. Smith 80-gallon questions

Does A.O. Smith still offer an 80-gallon residential electric water heater?

Yes. Its current residential range includes 80-gallon hybrid / heat pump models, including the HPTS-80 210. The model number matters because an older electric tank and a current hybrid can have different installation requirements.

Can a light-service commercial 80-gallon tank replace my home’s water heater?

That requires a project-specific assessment. We check the exact model’s intended application, electrical requirements, installation instructions and warranty terms before recommending equipment. Capacity alone is not enough to establish suitability.

Will an 80-gallon hybrid fit where my current tank sits?

We need measurements and photos to assess that. The tank must fit, and the installation must also provide the airflow, drainage and service clearances required by the selected model. A tight closet may require changes.

Do all A.O. Smith 80-gallon models have the same warranty?

No. Coverage depends on the exact product and application. Review the manufacturer’s written warranty for the proposed model, including tank, parts, labor, exclusions and claim requirements. Keep the purchase and installation records.
