When to consider this 40-gallon Rheem
WHE’s take: matching the gallon label is only a starting point. This medium-height electric model is one option when your current storage heater needs replacement. We look at available space and the hot water your household needs during its busiest period.
If your current 40-gallon heater met your needs until a recent problem, tell us what changed before choosing more capacity. If hot water has always run short, share which showers and appliances operate together. That helps us compare another 40-gallon tank with other options.
Understand the hot-water output
Rheem specifies a 55-gallon first-hour rating for PROE40 M2 RH95. This test rating helps compare performance, but is not a guaranteed amount under every household’s conditions. Incoming water temperature, settings and usage affect the result.
Its listed recovery rate is 21 gallons per hour at a 90°F temperature rise. The standard configuration uses 240-volt, single-phase power and two 4,500-watt elements operating non-simultaneously. That does not represent a standard 9,000-watt operating load.
Check the space and connections
Medium and tall versions have different dimensions, even when nominal capacity matches. We review the entire installation space, including room for piping and service access. Replacing a heater in a closet requires more than measuring the tank.
Send photos of the full heater, readable label, connections and location. WHE checks removal access, electrical compatibility, water connections and drainage. We can discuss alternative locations if the present one is difficult to service.
Compare our electric water heater options and the Rheem 50-gallon medium model. A larger tank has a different footprint and needs its own assessment.
Warranty and maintenance
Rheem lists a six-year limited tank-and-parts warranty, subject to its terms. Manufacturer coverage and installation labor coverage are separate; any WHE labor coverage should be described in your estimate. Sediment-reduction features do not eliminate the need to follow manufacturer maintenance guidance.
Rheem 40-gallon questions
Why does a 40-gallon model show 36 gallons of rated capacity?
Rheem lists 40 gallons as nominal capacity and 36 gallons as rated capacity. Compare exact-model specifications rather than relying only on the capacity in a product name.
Is this the tall Rheem 40-gallon model?
No. This guide covers PROE40 M2 RH95, the medium-height version. PROE40 T2 RH95 is a separate tall configuration.
Does the old 0.95 EF figure mean 0.95 UEF?
No. EF and UEF are different efficiency measures. The specification sheet used for this guide lists 0.93 UEF for PROE40 M2 RH95.
Will a 40-gallon tank supply my whole household?
That depends on demand and usage. Tell us about consecutive showers, large bathtub fills and overlapping appliance use so we can assess the options.
How do I get a replacement price?
Request an estimate and share photos. We review equipment, access and necessary work before quoting. Model choice and supplier availability are confirmed during that process.
