Is electric tankless a good fit for your home?
An electric tankless water heater uses resistance elements to heat water as it flows through the appliance. Its compact wall-mounted design can free up floor space, and it does not require combustion venting. The tradeoff is the electrical power needed to heat the requested flow immediately.
We discuss both the reason for changing equipment and what the home can support. Saving space, replacing a failed tankless heater and supplying one remote sink are different projects. If conversion work would be extensive, compare a conventional electric tank or hybrid heat pump water heater as part of the decision.
Whole-home and point-of-use installations
- Whole-home electric tankless: sized for the fixtures expected to run together, with electrical capacity checked for that equipment.
- Point-of-use electric tankless: selected for a particular sink or other limited demand. A small unit’s intended application should match the fixture it serves.
- Existing tankless replacement: review the current model, voltage, plumbing connections, service access and any performance concerns before selecting a replacement.
WHE’s Stiebel Eltron installation and model guide covers Tempra Trend and Tempra Plus equipment. It links to individual model specifications so you can compare options after the installation requirements are established.
Size for water flow and temperature rise
The number of bathrooms is only a starting point. We consider the showers, faucets and appliances you expect to use at the same time, plus the difference between incoming-water temperature and the required outlet temperature. Warm South Florida inlet water can help performance, but actual temperatures vary by location and season.
An advertised maximum gallons-per-minute figure does not describe every installation. High-flow showers, a large tub or several fixtures used together can change which model fits. Some condo buildings also have a different supply voltage than a typical single-family home, which can affect heating output.
The manufacturer’s Tempra sizing guide explains its inlet-temperature and fixture-flow assumptions. We use those details with the intended household demand rather than select equipment by its model number alone.
Check electrical capacity before converting a tank
An existing electric water heater circuit is not proof that the home is ready for whole-home electric tankless. Depending on the model, the installation may need multiple dedicated circuits or changes to the electrical service. A licensed electrician must assess the available capacity and the property’s other loads.
The plumbing proposal and any electrical work should be clear before you commit. Installation location, wiring access, service connections and applicable permit or inspection requirements all affect the project. For a condo, share any association rules and building-access requirements during planning.
Stiebel Eltron’s Tempra installation manual sets out model-specific requirements. A compact cabinet or the absence of a vent does not mean a heater is suitable for every location.
What affects electric tankless installation cost?
- Equipment and demand: the appropriate model and whether the project serves a whole home or a specific fixture.
- Replacement versus conversion: whether the existing plumbing and electrical installation suit the proposed heater.
- Electrical work: required circuits, wiring routes and any service changes identified by the electrician.
- Access and plumbing: mounting location, pipe changes, service valves and removal of the old equipment.
- Building requirements: applicable permits, inspections and condo coordination.
Compare the full installed proposal, including any separately quoted electrical work. The heater’s purchase price alone will not establish the conversion cost. WHE reviews the project details before providing an installation estimate.
Plan for maintenance and comfortable delivery
Water quality affects electric tankless equipment. Scale and sediment can create service needs, so accessible isolation valves and the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions matter. The manufacturer’s water-quality guidance explains why maintenance intervals depend on the water and usage.
Tankless heating also does not make hot water arrive instantly at a distant fixture. If that is your concern, we can review the plumbing layout and compatible recirculation options. For a broader explanation of heater types, temperature settings and scald protection, see our Hot Water Heater Guide.

If you have an electrician’s assessment or a building requirement, include that too.
Electric tankless installation questions
Can electric tankless replace my standard electric tank?
It may be an option after the hot-water demand, electrical supply and proposed location are checked. The existing tank circuit does not establish that a whole-home electric tankless unit can be connected without changes.
Will I need an electrical panel upgrade?
Possibly, but a panel’s label or empty breaker spaces alone do not answer that question. A licensed electrician needs to assess the selected heater along with the property’s other electrical loads and required circuits.
How many showers can an electric tankless heater supply?
That depends on the model, incoming water temperature, supply voltage and actual shower flow. Tell us which fixtures you want to use together, including high-flow showers or a large tub.
Does electric tankless need a gas line or exhaust vent?
An electric resistance tankless heater does not burn fuel, so it does not need a gas line or combustion exhaust vent. It still needs a suitable location, electrical supply and installation that follows its manual.
Will hot water arrive instantly at my faucet?
Not necessarily. Water in the pipe between the heater and faucet must move through first. We can discuss the location and compatible recirculation options if waiting is your main concern.
Does an electric tankless heater need maintenance?
Yes. Water quality and use affect the service needed. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for filters, scale control and descaling, and keep the unit and service connections accessible.
