A 98-gallon propane option for larger hot-water draws
The Rheem PRO+G98-76P RH is the propane (LP) version of Rheem’s Professional Classic Plus Heavy Duty atmospheric tank. It combines a large stored supply with a 75,100 BTU/h burner. WHE considers it when a home’s peak demand may justify more storage and the propane supply, venting and installation area can support the proposed heater.
For a propane replacement in Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter or nearby communities, we identify the existing fuel and model before comparing equipment. We also ask whether the shortage comes from a large bathtub, simultaneous showers or repeated draws with little recovery time.
Exact propane-model performance
| Nominal capacity / rated storage | 98 gallons / 93 gallons |
|---|---|
| Burner input | 75,100 BTU/h |
| Uniform Energy Factor | 0.58 UEF |
| First-hour rating | 142 gallons |
| Recovery at a 100°F temperature rise | 72.8 gallons per hour |
| Manufacturer warranty listing | Eight-year limited tank and parts warranty; application and certificate terms apply |
The 72.8 GPH recovery figure is based on a 100°F temperature rise, as stated in Rheem’s June 2025 sheet. It should not be compared directly with a recovery number published at a 90°F rise. Actual delivery depends on incoming water temperature, settings and the way fixtures are used.
Rheem lists 93 gallons rated storage within the 98-gallon nominal class. The 142-gallon first-hour figure combines stored hot water and recovery during the rating period. The sheet’s 80% thermal-efficiency figure describes a different measure from 0.58 UEF.
Check the propane supply as well as the tank size
WHE reviews the propane delivery system, regulator arrangement, available gas pressure and piping capacity for the heater and other connected appliances. A previous propane water heater does not establish that every replacement input is suitable. The drawing’s ½-inch gas connection is an appliance connection size, not a complete gas-line sizing instruction.
This model is designed for propane. The PRO+G98-76N RH natural-gas version has the same listed storage, input, recovery and first-hour rating, but must be supplied with natural gas. Rheem’s manual warns against converting either model to a different fuel.
Large-tank dimensions and installation planning
Rheem lists a 64-inch tank height and 28¼-inch diameter, with 67⅞ inches to the vent connection. The gas connection is 14⅞ inches above the base. The top water connections are 11 inches apart and use 1-inch connections; the drawing shows a ½-inch gas connection. The side relief-valve connection is 57 3/16 inches high. Listed shipping weight is 350 pounds.
WHE checks door openings, the route to the installation area, support, drain-pan space and room to remove the old tank. We also measure the space above the heater for its draft hood and vent connector. The 64-inch tank height does not describe the complete installed height, and the 350-pound figure is shipping weight, not the filled operating weight.
The wider footprint also affects the drain pan, relief-discharge route and service access. WHE checks water pressure and thermal expansion and reviews any existing loop connections. Rheem provides side water connections, but using them requires an appropriate plumbing design.
Venting, combustion air and electrical considerations
This is a Category I natural-draft heater with a factory draft hood. Its specification row lists a 4-inch vent. WHE checks vent condition, sizing, routing and draft together with combustion-air openings before recommending reuse of the existing system. Power-vent and direct-vent arrangements need a separate compatibility assessment.
The series uses piezo ignition; the manual illustrates a pilot and thermocouple system. There is no electric vent blower on this atmospheric model. WHE verifies any separately powered accessories during the installation review. The manufacturer’s manual states that the heater is not suitable for manufactured/mobile homes.
Compare the 98-gallon and 75-gallon propane versions
| Model | Rated storage | First-hour rating | Tank height × diameter | UEF |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PRO+G98-76P RH | 93 gallons | 142 gallons | 64 × 28¼ inches | 0.58 |
| PRO+G75-76P RH | 73 gallons | 119 gallons | 60 × 26¼ inches | 0.63 |
The two propane models share a 75,100 BTU/h input and 72.8 GPH recovery at a 100°F rise. Choosing the 98 adds 20 gallons of rated storage and raises the published first-hour rating by 23 gallons. The tank is also 4 inches taller and 2 inches wider, so the smaller model may be easier to accommodate where space is limited.
We weigh that additional stored supply against the household’s pattern of use and the work needed to install the larger tank. Added storage can support a bigger draw, but it does not increase these models’ listed burner recovery rate.
Maintenance and eight-year limited coverage
Rheem lists an anode rod, brass drain valve and Guardian combustion safety system. Its filter-free design still needs the inspection and care described in the manual. Access for vent and burner inspection, draining and anode service is part of choosing a workable installation location.
Rheem’s linked certificate lists eight years of limited tank and parts coverage for the original owner in a single-family dwelling, subject to its terms. It lists a one-year term for other installation applications and excludes service, repair and reinstallation labor, permits, and removal or disposal expenses. WHE verifies the applicable certificate and states any separate installation coverage in the estimate.
ProtectionPlus can extend the limited tank term to 12 years when applicable; it is optional. Availability, installed price and the proposed scope of work are confirmed for the individual job.

PRO+G98-76P RH frequently asked questions
Is PRO+G98-76P RH propane or natural gas?
This exact model is propane (LP). PRO+G98-76N RH is the natural-gas counterpart. The manual prohibits using a fuel different from the unit’s rating plate or attempting a fuel conversion.
What do 98, 93 and 142 gallons mean?
98 gallons is the nominal size, 93 gallons is rated storage, and 142 gallons is the first-hour delivery rating. They describe different measurements of the same model.
Why is the input listed as 75,100 BTU/h?
That is the value in Rheem’s exact model row. The “76” in the model designation should not be used to substitute a 76,000 BTU/h rating.
Will this fit my current propane heater location?
WHE must check the space and venting. The tank is 64 inches high by 28¼ inches in diameter, with 67⅞ inches to the vent connection. Its 4-inch atmospheric vent, piping and service clearances also need room.
Is twelve-year coverage standard?
No. Rheem lists eight-year limited tank and parts coverage, subject to the application and certificate. ProtectionPlus is an optional tank-warranty extension. The manufacturer certificate excludes installation labor and other listed expenses.
