Compare Rinnai’s 50- and 80-gallon heat pumps
These are electric storage heaters that use heat from surrounding air, with resistance elements available to support demand. The model guides below distinguish nominal size from actual rated storage and explain installation requirements.
| Model | Nominal / rated capacity | UEF | First-hour rating | Drawing A × B |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rinnai REHP50 | 50 / 46 gal | 3.75 | 73 gal | 66.4 × 21.7 in. |
| Rinnai REHP80 | 80 / 74 gal | 4.00 | 91 gal | 74.2 × 25.6 in. |
The REHP80 offers 28 more gallons of rated storage and 18 more gallons of first-hour delivery. Its larger body needs more floor space and headroom. The appropriate choice depends on your peak demand, the installation location and the time between uses.
What we check before installation
- Physical access: the delivery route, tank dimensions, overhead obstructions, pan and future service access.
- Power: the available 208–240V supply and 30A circuit, checked against the equipment nameplate.
- Airflow: usable room volume, ventilation or ducting where required, and fan/compressor sound near occupied rooms.
- Water and drainage: side connections, pressure, thermal expansion, relief-valve discharge and a separate condensate route.
- Protection and controls: any optional leak kit and the mixing valve needed for Vacation Mode.
A garage can be a practical location when conditions are suitable. If your current heater is in an attic or tight closet, tell us whether you want to consider relocation. See our hybrid water heater installation service and electric water heater options.
Rinnai Vacation Mode notice
Vacation Mode requires a mixing valve. Rinnai’s September 2026 Technical Bulletin 217 applies to this model. At the end of a vacation cycle, stored water can reach approximately 140–149°F for the tank-cleaning cycle. Rinnai says not to use Vacation Mode without a correctly installed and working ASSE 1017 thermostatic mixing valve. Have a qualified installer verify the valve and delivery temperature before using this feature.

Send clear photos of the model label, full installation, connections and available space. Tell us when you run short of hot water and whether you have a large tub or recirculation system. We use those details to discuss equipment and the complete scope of work.

Rinnai heat pump installation questions
Should I choose the REHP50 or REHP80?
We compare peak demand and available space. The REHP50 has 46 gallons of rated storage and a 73-gallon first-hour rating; the REHP80 has 74 gallons and a 91-gallon first-hour rating.
Can a Rinnai heat pump replace a gas water heater?
Potentially, but the conversion requires review of the electrical supply, location, airflow and drainage as well as the existing gas equipment. WHE evaluates the complete project before recommending the change.
Does a heat pump water heater need a drain?
Yes. Heat-pump operation produces condensate that needs a suitable route or pump. The manual says condensate must not drain into the water-heater pan.
Is leak protection included?
Rinnai lists its leak kit separately. We confirm what is included in the proposed installation and whether additional protection is appropriate.
