Is the E6N-40H 110 right for your home?
The American E6N-40H 110 is the narrowest of these four standard electric models. Its 18-inch diameter can be useful in a tight utility space, provided there is room for the 61¼-inch body and the top plumbing connections. It carries a 40-gallon nominal rating, 36 gallons of rated storage and a 53-gallon first-hour rating.
This tall model is worth comparing with the short E6N-40R when floor space is the main constraint. The short model is 11½ inches lower but 2½ inches wider. A narrow tank still needs a suitable drain pan, service access and a clear route into the installation space.
American E6N-40H 110 specifications
| Model / product item | E6N-40H 110 / 100273076 |
|---|---|
| Nominal capacity / rated storage | 40 gallons / 36 gallons |
| Type / installation | Tall electric storage tank / indoor |
| Uniform Energy Factor | 0.92 UEF |
| First-hour rating | 53 gallons |
| Standard recovery at a 90°F rise | 21 gallons per hour at the sheet’s standard 4,500W rating |
| Voltage / electrical configuration | 240V; series standard is dual 4,500W elements — conflicting product-page fields require verification below |
| Drawing A: height / C: diameter | 61¼ / 18 inches |
| Water connections | Top; ¾-inch male connections on 8-inch centers |
| Insulation blanket included | No |
| Limited tank / parts warranty | 6 years / 6 years, subject to the written warranty |
Rated storage is the water held in the tank. First-hour rating measures hot-water delivery during a standardized test, including water heated during that hour. UEF is an efficiency comparison; it does not predict a particular household’s bill.
Dimensions and replacement fit
The listed 61¼-inch height and 18-inch diameter describe the heater, not the complete installation space. Allow for the drain pan, top water and electrical connections, relief-valve discharge and room to service the front panels, drain valve and anode. WHE also checks the access route and floor support with the tank full.
A tall tank can save floor space, but overhead plumbing and future anode service still need room. Measure the finished installation area rather than relying on the existing tank’s gallon label.
Electrical configuration and manufacturer documents
Verify the electrical configuration before ordering. American’s product-page description and series specification sheet describe two 4,500W elements, while the same product page’s technical fields list one element and 5,500W maximum wattage. Those entries conflict. This guide uses the sheet’s standard 4,500W ratings for comparison; it does not establish the electrical configuration of a delivered unit. WHE checks the equipment nameplate, wiring diagram and supplier’s exact configuration before confirming the circuit and replacement.
The 110 suffix is a model-series identifier, not the supply voltage. This is a 240V electric water heater. Circuit suitability depends on the actual nameplate and installation instructions.
The product-page download labeled NRESS00315 opens a sheet marked NRESS00117, January 2023. American also publishes a March 2025 NRESS00117 sheet; its capacity, first-hour rating, UEF and A/C dimensions for E6N-40H agree with the earlier sheet. Use the exact supplied unit’s documentation for final installation planning.
Compare 40- and 50-gallon tall and short models
| Model | Nominal / rated storage | First-hour rating | Height × diameter |
|---|---|---|---|
| E6N-40H 110 (tall) | 40 / 36 gal | 53 gal | 61¼ × 18 in. |
| E6N-40R 110 (short) | 40 / 37 gal | 55 gal | 49¾ × 20½ in. |
| E6N-50H 130 (tall) | 50 / 46 gal | 62 gal | 59 × 20½ in. |
| E6N-50R 110 (short) | 50 / 46 gal | 57 gal | 49¼ × 23 in. |
The 40-gallon short model adds one gallon of rated storage and two gallons in the first-hour test, while trading more width for less height. If more reserve is needed, the 50-gallon tall model provides 46 gallons of rated storage and 62 gallons in the first-hour test; its body is 2½ inches wider than this model.
All four standard configurations list 0.92 UEF and 21 GPH recovery at a 90°F rise. WHE compares your busiest period of use, shower flow and overlapping appliances with the delivery ratings. A fixed number of people is not enough to size a replacement reliably.
Installation, maintenance and six-year limited warranty
WHE reviews the drain pan and drainage route, water pressure, thermal expansion, temperature-and-pressure relief discharge and service access as part of the installation scope. These conventional electric tanks do not use a combustion flue or the airflow and condensate arrangements of a heat-pump water heater.
The standard tall and short series includes an Incoloy stainless steel lower element, anode protection, a glass-lined tank, a brass drain valve and a self-cleaning dip tube. That dip tube helps control sediment; it does not replace flushing, anode inspection or other maintenance in the manual.
American lists six-year limited tank and parts coverage. Eligibility, use, installation and maintenance conditions apply. The warranty does not provide six years of included labor, removal or reinstallation. Review the certificate supplied with the heater before assuming a particular service cost is covered.

American E6N-40H 110 FAQs
How much water does the E6N-40H 110 store?
It is a 40-gallon nominal model with 36 gallons of rated storage. Its 53-gallon first-hour rating measures delivery during the standardized first-hour test, not the volume stored at one time.
How does the 40-gallon tall compare with the short model?
The E6N-40H 110 is 61¼ inches high and 18 inches in diameter. The E6N-40R 110 is 49¾ inches high and 20½ inches in diameter. The short model lists 37 gallons of rated storage and a 55-gallon first-hour rating, versus 36 and 53 for this tall model.
What electrical supply does this model need?
American lists 240V, but its product page conflicts with the series sheet on element count and wattage. The sheet’s standard configuration uses two 4,500W elements. WHE verifies the exact unit’s nameplate and wiring requirements before confirming the installation.
Does it include an insulation blanket?
No. American marks this standard tall product as having no included insulation blanket. It is a different model from the blanket-included lowboys.
Does the six-year warranty include installation labor?
The listed six-year coverage is limited tank and parts coverage. Labor, removal, reinstallation and other costs are governed by the written terms and are not automatically included for six years.
