Is the E6N-55H 100 right for your home?
The American E6N-55H 100 is a 55-gallon standard electric water heater with 55 gallons of rated storage and a 72-gallon first-hour rating. It offers more reserve than the 50-gallon tall model, whose rated storage is 46 gallons. This can make it worth considering when hot-water demand is concentrated into back-to-back showers or other overlapping use.
Although American classifies it as tall, its 56½-inch body is 2½ inches lower than the E6N-50H 130. The tradeoff is width: the 55-gallon model is 24 inches in diameter, 3½ inches wider than the 50-gallon tall. WHE checks the doorway, drain pan and finished installation space before recommending the larger tank.

| First-hour rating | 72 gallons |
| Recovery at a 90°F rise | 21 gallons per hour at the standard 4,500W rating |
| Electrical configuration | 240V; two 4,500W elements; linked product page lists 4,500W maximum input |

First-hour rating measures delivery during a standardized test, including water heated during that hour. It is not stored capacity. UEF is an efficiency rating rather than a prediction of your utility bill; incoming water temperature, settings and usage affect actual performance.
Compare the 40-, 50- and 55-gallon tall models
| Model | Nominal / rated storage | UEF | First-hour rating | Height × diameter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| E6N-40H 110 | 40 / 36 gal | 0.92 | 53 gal | 61¼ × 18 in. |
| E6N-50H 130 | 50 / 46 gal | 0.92 | 62 gal | 59 × 20½ in. |
| E6N-55H 100 | 55 / 55 gal | 0.93 | 72 gal | 56½ × 24 in. |
Moving from the 50-gallon tall to this 55 adds nine gallons of rated storage and ten gallons in the first-hour test. Both list 21 GPH recovery at a 90°F rise in the standard configuration. The larger reserve does not increase the published recovery rate.
If your current heater runs out, tell WHE when it happens and which fixtures are being used. Shower flow, overlapping appliances and the condition of the existing heater help determine whether additional storage will solve the problem. A fixed number of people is not enough to size the replacement.
Dimensions, electrical supply and installation
The 56½-inch height and 24-inch diameter are heater dimensions, not the complete installation envelope. Allow separately for the pan, top water and electrical connections, relief-valve discharge, front service panels and anode access. WHE checks the floor’s support for the full tank as well as the route into the space.
The linked configuration is 240V with 4,500W maximum input. The broader series sheet lists other available wattages, so WHE verifies the actual equipment nameplate, wiring diagram and existing circuit before confirming the installation. The 100 suffix identifies the model series; it is not the voltage.
Installation planning also covers water pressure, thermal expansion, drain-pan drainage and temperature-and-pressure relief discharge. This is a conventional resistance electric tank, so it has no combustion flue or heat-pump airflow requirement.
Correct specification sheet and manufacturer documents
At our October 17, 2026 review, the product page’s specification download opened a ProLine Master Smart sheet covering EE8F models. That document describes a different series. The correct NRESS00117 standard electric specification sheet, March 2025 includes the E6N-55H row and supports the ratings used here. Smart-series features such as Wi-Fi or automatic leak shutoff should not be assumed for this model from that mismatched download.
Other official sources are the American E6N-55H 100 product page, its residential electric installation and care manual, revision B and limited warranty. Confirm the documents shipped with the supplied heater. The photograph is American’s shared tall-series image; proportions and label details may vary.
Maintenance and six-year limited warranty
The series includes an Incoloy stainless steel lower element, a glass-lined tank, anode protection, a brass drain valve and a self-cleaning dip tube. The dip tube helps reduce sediment buildup, but regular maintenance remains necessary. Keep the drain valve, service panels and anode accessible for the inspections and servicing described in the manual.
American lists six-year limited tank and parts coverage for this model. Eligibility, use, installation and maintenance conditions apply. This does not mean six years of included labor, removal or reinstallation; those costs are governed by the written warranty terms.

American E6N-55H 100 FAQs
Does the E6N-55H 100 actually store 55 gallons?
Yes. American lists both nominal capacity and rated storage at 55 gallons. The separate 72-gallon first-hour rating measures delivery during the first hour of a standardized test.
How much more hot water does it offer than the 50-gallon tall?
The E6N-55H has nine more gallons of rated storage and ten more gallons in the first-hour test than the E6N-50H 130. Both standard configurations list 21 GPH recovery at a 90°F rise.
Will it fit where a 50-gallon heater was installed?
It depends on the existing model and installation. This heater measures 56½ inches high and 24 inches in diameter. It is wider than the current American 50-gallon tall, so WHE checks the pan, access route, plumbing and service space.
Is this a smart or Wi-Fi water heater?
The E6N-55H is the standard ProLine electric model covered here. Its product page currently links to a different Master Smart series sheet. Do not treat that document’s Wi-Fi or leak-shutoff features as included equipment on this heater.
What warranty does this model have?
American lists six-year limited tank and parts coverage, subject to the written warranty’s eligibility and installation conditions. Labor, removal and reinstallation are not automatically covered for six years.
