The American G62-75T75-4NOV 400 is a 74-gallon nominal ProLine high-capacity natural-gas water heater with 75,100 BTU/h input. This six-year-warranty atmospheric-vent model is listed with side-loop connections. We consider it when a home needs more stored hot water than a smaller gas tank can provide and the existing gas supply, vent and installation space can support it.

When this 74-gallon model is worth comparing

For a natural-gas replacement, the useful question is what happens during the home’s busiest hour. Closely spaced showers, a larger tub fill and other overlapping draws can justify comparing this model with a 50-gallon tank. We also look at what caused the original complaint: more storage does not resolve a restricted hot-water line or a circulation problem.

American lists 71 gallons of rated storage and a 125-gallon first-hour rating for this exact model. First-hour performance includes reheating during a test, so it should be used alongside the home’s actual draw pattern. It is not a promise that every installation can deliver 125 gallons continuously at a particular fixture temperature.

Side-loop connections and replacement piping

This is the Side Loop: Yes configuration. The current product page lists top water connections as well as side loops. In the August 2026 American catalog, the G and H side-connection references are 15½ and 50¼ inches. Those references help compare piping layouts, but the actual supplied connections still need to be checked before installation.

Side taps are connection points, not a complete circulation system. If a home uses a return loop, we review its piping and controls as part of the replacement. The presence of taps alone does not establish that a circulation pump or its controls are included. If the existing system uses only top connections, that should be clear in the installation plan as well.

Gas supply, atmospheric venting and service access

The natural-gas input is 75,100 BTU/h, compared with 40,000 BTU/h for the smaller G61-50T40R 400. That increase belongs in the supply and combustion-air assessment. We review the other appliances served by the gas system before assuming that the existing water-heater branch is suitable.

This is an indoor atmospheric-vent model, and American states that its controls do not require an external electrical connection. We still assess the vent route, its condition and the combustion-air supply. An existing connector that physically reaches the new draft hood is not enough to establish a suitable vent installation.

The tank is wider than the smaller tall ProLine models. We check the access route and working space, including room to reach the drain, burner area and anode after installation. The replacement should leave a serviceable system, rather than simply fill the available footprint.

Dimensions and manufacturer document notes

The product page lists a height of 57 inches and diameter of 26.39 inches. The August 2026 catalog’s model table gives A = 61 inches at the draft-hood reference, B = 58½ inches at the upper water-connection reference and C = 26½ inches in diameter. Use the drawing to plan the installation envelope, allow additional vent and service space, and confirm the supplied unit for a tight fit.

The product page also lists a 5-inch flue-diameter field, while the catalog lists a 4-inch draft hood. These separately labeled figures should not be used alone to size a vent. The installer must review the supplied hood, the complete vent system and the instructions that apply to the delivered model.

American’s product-page spec-sheet link currently opens NRGSS00115, which does not contain this high-capacity model in its table. The official catalog linked below does. The linked manual, 100263114, is a general residential FVIR gas manual; confirm the applicable supplied manual before using its connection or venting details. This guide does not infer FVIR construction from that download link.

Compare the other capacity and fuel choices

The same-fuel 98-gallon G62-100T77-4NOV 400 has 95 gallons of rated storage and a listed 170-gallon first-hour rating, compared with 71 and 125 gallons here. Its published input is also 75,100 BTU/h, and it is listed without side loops. The larger tank changes the reserve, physical fit and connection arrangement; it should not be treated as an identical replacement with extra capacity.

For the other fuel, see the G62-75T75-4PV 401 propane guide. For a smaller same-fuel option, compare the 50-gallon G61-50T40R 400. The American Water Heaters page and our water heater model catalog collect the other available guides.

Maintenance and warranty

Choose an installation layout that leaves the heater accessible for inspection and routine care. A self-cleaning dip tube does not eliminate maintenance. We discuss a care schedule based on the home’s water conditions and keep the model and serial number available for future parts or warranty questions.

The six-year limited tank and parts warranty is subject to American’s written eligibility requirements and exclusions. It is not six years of free removal or installation labor. Keep the purchase and installation records and review the certificate for the intended application.

Frequently asked questions

Does this 74-gallon model have side-loop connections?

Yes. American lists Side Loop: Yes for this exact model. The catalog drawing identifies lower and upper side-connection references at 15½ and 50¼ inches. Confirm the supplied unit’s arrangement before laying out replacement piping.

Is G62-75T75-4NOV 400 natural gas or propane?

G62-75T75-4NOV 400 is the factory natural gas model, rated at 75,100 BTU/h. Select the correct fuel configuration and check the complete model number on the data plate. Do not treat the natural-gas and propane versions as interchangeable.

Why is it called a 74-gallon heater when the model number contains 75?

American lists 74 gallons of nominal capacity and 71 gallons of rated storage for this model. The published 125-gallon first-hour rating includes reheating under a test procedure and is not the amount stored in the tank.

Will it fit where my existing 75-gallon heater sits?

The old capacity label alone cannot answer that. Compare the delivered unit with the space, doorway, pan, piping and vent. The catalog shows a 61-inch draft-hood reference and a 26½-inch diameter, with additional installation and service space required.

Does the six-year warranty cover installation labor?

American lists six-year limited tank and parts coverage, subject to its written terms. Removal, installation labor and related expenses are generally excluded. Retain the purchase and installation records along with the model and serial number.
