When the Rheem PROG50-36P RH60 is a good replacement candidate
The Rheem PROG50-36P RH60 is a tall Professional Classic atmospheric water heater built for propane gas. It is worth considering when replacing a conventional propane storage tank with a suitable natural-draft vent. At WHE, we check the existing fuel supply, vent arrangement and available space before recommending a replacement for a home in Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter or nearby communities.
Keep the complete model number when comparing estimates. Rheem also lists a PROG50-36P RH62 with different dimensions and performance, along with natural-gas models that look similar. The RH60 suffix identifies the specific model covered here.
Verified capacity and hot-water performance
| Nominal capacity / rated storage | 50 gallons / 48 gallons |
|---|---|
| Fuel and burner input | Propane (LP), 36,000 BTU/h |
| Uniform Energy Factor | 0.64 UEF |
| First-hour rating | 85 gallons |
| Recovery at a 90°F temperature rise | 36.4 gallons per hour |
| Standard manufacturer warranty listing | Six-year limited tank and parts warranty |
These values come from the exact model row in Rheem’s May 2024 US specification sheet. First-hour rating combines stored hot water and burner recovery under standardized conditions; it does not mean the tank holds 85 gallons. We ask about overlapping showers, large bathtub fills and when the current heater runs short to judge whether the published delivery suits the household. Actual hot-water delivery depends on incoming water temperature, settings, fixture flow and use.
Dimensions: allow room above the tank
The tank is 58⅜ inches high and 20½ inches in diameter. Rheem lists 61¼ inches to the vent connection. The gas connection is 14¼ inches above the base, and the side temperature-and-pressure relief connection is 51⅜ inches high. The top water connections are 8 inches apart and use ¾-inch connections; the drawing shows a ½-inch gas connection. Published shipping weight is 150 pounds.
For a replacement, we measure the access opening and the space needed for the draft hood, vent connector, water piping and service access. A heater that fits through the door may still need changes above or beside it. Drain-pan space, relief-discharge routing and access to the controls and anode also affect the installation.
Propane supply, venting and electrical considerations
This is a Category I natural-draft heater. Rheem’s manual requires the factory draft hood and a suitable vent to the outdoors. The specification row lists a 3- or 4-inch vent; the complete vent design determines which arrangement is appropriate. An existing power-vent or direct-vent installation needs a separate compatibility review.
WHE checks the propane supply and regulator arrangement, gas pressure and capacity, shutoff access, combustion air, vent condition and draft. The heater must match the fuel on its rating plate. Rheem’s manual warns against converting it to a different gas type and excludes manufactured/mobile-home use.
The manual shows a pilot and piezo ignition system, and this atmospheric design has no electric vent blower. We verify the supplied controls and any separately powered accessories when reviewing electrical needs. The plumbing review also includes water pressure, thermal expansion and a suitable relief-discharge path.
How the RH60 compares with other 50-gallon propane models
| Rheem model | Tank height × diameter | First-hour rating | UEF |
|---|---|---|---|
| PROG50-36P RH60 | 58⅜ × 20½ inches | 85 gallons | 0.64 |
| PROG50-36P RH62 | 59¼ × 21½ inches | 76 gallons | 0.65 |
| PROG50S-36P RH61 | 51⅛ × 23¾ inches | 87 gallons | 0.63 |
All three list 48 gallons rated storage, 36,000 BTU/h propane input and 36.4 GPH recovery at a 90°F rise. The RH62 is taller and wider than the requested RH60, while the short RH61 trades height for a wider footprint. These differences matter when matching an existing closet or vent connector. WHE compares installation fit and household demand together rather than selecting by the 50-gallon label alone.
Maintenance and warranty expectations
The series includes an anode rod, protective tank lining, sediment-control features and a brass drain valve. Its filter-free combustion system still needs the inspection and care described in the manual. We consider vent condition, burner operation, sediment and anode access when planning service.
Rheem lists a six-year limited tank-and-parts warranty, subject to the applicable Residential Warranty Certificate. ProtectionPlus tank-warranty extensions are optional. Equipment coverage does not establish what installation labor is included; WHE explains any separate installation coverage in the estimate. Price and availability are confirmed for the proposed job.

PROG50-36P RH60 frequently asked questions
Is this model propane or natural gas?
PROG50-36P RH60 is the propane model. Its specification row lists 36,000 BTU/h LP input. The natural-gas counterpart has a different model number, and Rheem’s manual warns against converting the heater to a different fuel.
Why does a 50-gallon heater list 48 gallons rated storage?
Rheem publishes both the nominal size class and the DOE-based rated capacity. This model is in the 50-gallon class with 48 gallons rated storage. Its 85-gallon first-hour rating is a separate delivery measurement that includes recovery.
Is 58⅜ inches the total installed height?
That is the tank height. The listed height to the vent connection is 61¼ inches, and the completed installation needs space for venting, piping and required clearances. WHE measures the full installation area before confirming fit.
Can it connect to an existing power-vent pipe?
Compatibility cannot be assumed. This heater uses natural draft and a factory draft hood. WHE reviews the vent system and combustion-air supply before recommending it as a replacement.
Does it include a ten-year warranty?
The standard listing is six years of limited tank and parts coverage, subject to the warranty certificate. ProtectionPlus extensions are optional and do not automatically establish installation-labor coverage.
