Is the Rheem PROPH50 T2 RH400-SO right for your home?

The Rheem PROPH50 T2 RH400-SO is the 50-gallon Professional Prestige ProTerra hybrid with LeakGuard and top water connections. It uses a heat pump to move heat from surrounding air into stored water, with electric elements available for additional demand. WHE considers this model for homeowners who want a heat-pump replacement and have a suitable location for airflow, drainage and service.

A garage can be worth evaluating, but a hybrid is not automatically a direct swap for a conventional electric tank. We check the room, access and peak hot-water use before recommending equipment for a home in Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter or nearby communities.

Capacity, efficiency and hot-water delivery

Rheem lists 50 gallons nominal capacity, 45 gallons rated storage, 3.88 UEF and a 67-gallon first-hour rating for this exact model. The July 2025 specification sheet also lists 27 gallons per hour recovery at a 90°F temperature rise. First-hour rating measures delivery under test conditions; it is not the amount stored in the tank or a promise for every usage pattern.

The unit is ENERGY STAR certified. Its operating modes include Energy Saver, Heat Pump, High Demand, Electric and Vacation/Away. The manual describes Energy Saver as balancing compressor operation with electric assistance, while High Demand uses compressor and electric heat together. Air temperature, mode, incoming water temperature and demand affect performance. A series-wide savings figure is not a household cost estimate.

Dimensions: body height versus the ducted drawing

The specification drawing lists 61¾ inches body height (A) and 22¼ inches body diameter (B). The height to the top of the illustrated shutoff valve is 66⅞ inches (L). Plan dimensions F and G are 27⅜ and 22½ inches; fittings and the drawing’s relief-valve allowance must be considered along with the tank diameter.

Rheem’s product page displays 78.63 inches as height. That matches dimension H, 78⅝ inches, with the illustrated duct elbow, rather than the body-height dimension. WHE checks the actual top- or side-connection layout, valve access, duct arrangement and filter removal space. Neither the body height nor the ducted drawing alone establishes the final installation clearance.

The published empty unit weight is 185 pounds, with an approximate shipping weight of 203 pounds. We review the support surface and access path for the filled heater as part of placement planning.

Airflow, condensate and installation space

A heat pump needs usable air volume, and its fan and compressor affect where it belongs in the home. Rheem lists an ambient operating range of 37–145°F. WHE checks airflow, nearby living spaces, service access and the route for condensate before recommending a location. This is indoor electric equipment with no gas connection or combustion flue; air ducting may still be needed.

Rheem’s linked documents differ on room-volume guidance. The AP23657 Rev. 04 manual uses more than 1,200 cubic feet of unoccupied air space for an unducted room needing no added ventilation, and calls for louvers in its 700–1,200-cubic-foot example. The July 2025 specification sheet uses a more-than-700-cubic-foot example. WHE verifies the instructions supplied with the exact unit and the proposed ventilation or ducting; tank fit alone is not sufficient.

The manual calls for 6 inches above the heater for airflow and filter access and keeps the unducted exhaust at least 6 inches from walls or hard surfaces. Condensate needs a suitable drain route or pump; the manual says not to discharge it into the water-heater drain pan. Water and condensate connections are ¾-inch NPT. WHE also reviews relief discharge, water pressure and thermal expansion.

Electrical requirements and LeakGuard

This RH400-SO model uses 208–240V single-phase power. Its specification row lists a 30-amp breaker, 4,500W element rating at 240V, 5,000W total unit wattage and 21A maximum. At 208V, Rheem says element output drops to 3,375W. WHE verifies the supplied nameplate, circuit, disconnect and grounding rather than borrowing the requirements of a separate 15-amp or 120V model.

LeakGuard includes a factory-installed leak-detection cable and an automatic shutoff valve supplied with the heater. Correct valve installation and commissioning matter. Leak protection does not replace sound plumbing, drainage or maintenance. Built-in EcoNet Wi-Fi supports remote controls and monitoring with a compatible internet connection, and EcoPort provides a demand-response interface.

How the 50- and 80-gallon models compare

The 80-gallon PROPH80 T2 RH400-SO adds 27 gallons of rated storage and 20 gallons in the first-hour test. It also needs a larger installation envelope. Both models list 27 GPH recovery at a 90°F rise, so the larger tank’s storage advantage should not be confused with a faster published recovery rate.

For comparison with a conventional tank, the PROE50 M2 RH95 has the same 45 gallons rated storage, but lists 0.93 UEF, a 62-gallon first-hour rating and a 48-inch tank height. A hybrid can offer substantially different efficiency, yet still require more height, an air path and a condensate drain. Actual running costs depend on the installation and household use.

Maintenance and limited warranty

Keep the washable air filter accessible, and include condensate drainage, anode condition, sediment and leak-system checks in the service discussion. If the home has recirculation, WHE reviews its controls and piping; the linked manual recommends on-demand operation because circulation adds load to the heater.

Rheem lists a 10-year limited tank-and-parts warranty, subject to the applicable Residential Warranty Certificate. That listing should not be read as ten years of installation labor or unconditional replacement. WHE confirms the proposed equipment, availability, price and any installation coverage with the estimate.

PROPH50 T2 RH400-SO frequently asked questions

Is PROPH50 T2 RH400-SO a 15-amp or 30-amp model?

This exact SO model is listed with a 30-amp breaker, 208–240V single-phase supply and 5,000W total unit rating at the specified configuration. Do not substitute the ratings of a separate 15-amp ProTerra model.

Why does Rheem’s website show a 78.63-inch height?

That corresponds to dimension H, 78⅝ inches, in the specification drawing with the illustrated duct elbow. Body height A is 61¾ inches; height L with the shown shutoff valve is 66⅞ inches. Fittings and required clearances still need room.

Does the 50-gallon model have 50 gallons of rated storage?

Its nominal capacity is 50 gallons, while rated storage is 45 gallons. The 67-gallon first-hour rating is a separate standardized delivery measure.

Will LeakGuard prevent every possible water leak?

It provides a leak-detection cable and automatic water shutoff valve for the heater. It does not remove the need for correct piping, drainage, valve installation and maintenance, or guarantee protection from every source of water damage.

Can it go in the same closet as my electric tank?

Only after the complete space is checked. WHE reviews usable air volume, ventilation or ducting, equipment height, service access and condensate disposal. A closed closet that fits the tank physically may not provide enough air.
