Is the A.O. Smith ENLB-50W 110 the right lowboy for your home?

The A.O. Smith ProLine ENLB-50W 110 is a low-profile electric storage water heater with top water connections. Its short, wide shape is designed for places where a conventional tall tank will not fit. At Water Heating Experts, we assess the available space, household hot-water demand and the existing electrical supply before recommending this model for a home in Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter or a nearby community.

This model is listed with 48 gallons nominal capacity and 44 gallons of rated storage. Its 40-gallon first-hour rating is a standardized hot-water delivery measurement, not the volume held in the tank. Despite its larger storage capacity, the lower-wattage configuration can produce less hot water in a busy first hour than some smaller, higher-output heaters. We look at your actual usage patterns rather than selecting equipment by gallon size alone.

Lowboy dimensions and top connections

The tank measures 34 inches high and 26½ inches in diameter. Its ¾-inch connections are on top, so sufficient overhead room for piping and service is essential. The overall installation must also allow safe access to electrical components, the drain valve and the temperature-and-pressure relief valve, as well as removal of the existing heater. We confirm the available space and any needed plumbing changes during the estimate.

The heater is intended for indoor installation, with a supplied insulation blanket. If your current unit is in an attic or other hard-to-access location, we can discuss the practicality of a garage installation when suitable.

Why the W suffix matters: electrical requirements and recovery

ENLB-50W 110 is not the same as ENLB-50 110. The W suffix denotes a lower-wattage configuration. A.O. Smith’s exact-model online technical listing specifies 208 volts, 3,000 watts maximum input and one heating element. The manufacturer’s broader ProLine specification sheet lists the ENLB-50W family with 240-volt wattage options from 1,000 to 3,500 watts and approximately 16 gallons per hour recovery at a 90°F temperature rise. Those documents describe different electrical configurations, so the actual unit’s label and installation documentation must control.

Because the manufacturer’s general promotional copy mentions dual 4,500-watt elements, we do not assume that the higher-wattage specification applies to this W-suffix model. A correctly specified replacement requires checking the existing voltage, circuit, breaker, wiring, element arrangement and available equipment. Its published efficiency rating is 0.91 Uniform Energy Factor (UEF).

Should you consider the regular ENLB-50 instead?

The regular A.O. Smith ENLB-50 110 has the same 48-gallon nominal and 44-gallon rated-storage figures but a higher published 60-gallon first-hour rating. That distinction can matter for back-to-back showers or when laundry and bathing overlap. The electrical and installation requirements are also different, so it is not a direct interchangeable substitute. WHE can compare suitable configurations and any electrical work that may be needed.

If you have less floor space but more vertical room, compare a conventional tall model such as the A.O. Smith ENT-50 130. If operating energy use is the main priority, a hybrid heat-pump water heater may be worth reviewing where sufficient space, airflow and drainage are available.

Tank protection and warranty

A.O. Smith specifies a Blue Diamond glass-lined tank, a CoreGard anode rod and a brass drain valve. The general model page also describes DynaClean, but the technical sheet says its diffuser design is not used on lowboy models, so we do not include that diffuser as a confirmed feature. Tank-protection features do not eliminate the need for manufacturer-recommended maintenance or attention to water-quality issues.

The manufacturer lists a six-year limited tank and parts warranty, subject to written terms. Installation labor, removal and other costs are separate. WHE confirms equipment availability, suitability, installation scope and any applicable labor coverage before quoting the work.

ENLB-50W 110 frequently asked questions

Is the ENLB-50W 110 a 50-gallon or 48-gallon water heater?

The model belongs to the approximately 50-gallon class, but A.O. Smith lists 48 gallons nominal capacity and 44 gallons of rated storage. Those are different from the 40-gallon first-hour delivery rating.

Why is its first-hour rating only 40 gallons?

This is a lower-wattage W-suffix configuration. Recovery and first-hour delivery are affected by the heating arrangement, so a larger storage tank does not always produce a higher first-hour rating than a different model.

Can it replace a 240-volt electric water heater?

Not without confirming the exact electrical configuration. A.O. Smith’s model page specifies 208 volts and 3,000 watts, while the general specification sheet lists other wattage configurations in the W series. WHE verifies the supplied nameplate and electrical system before selecting equipment.

Will this lowboy fit in my closet or cabinet?

The tank is 34 inches high and 26½ inches wide. Additional room is required above it for the water connections and around it for service, wiring and removal. Measurements and installation photos help determine whether it is suitable.

Can WHE install the ENLB-50W 110 in Jupiter or Palm Beach Gardens?

WHE serves Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens and nearby Palm Beach County communities. Mention the exact model number when requesting a free installation estimate. Availability, electrical compatibility and the installation schedule are confirmed separately.
