Is the A.O. Smith HPTV-50 210 right for your home?

The A.O. Smith Voltex 120V HPTV-50 210 is a 50-gallon nominal plug-in hybrid electric heat-pump water heater. It transfers heat from surrounding air to heat stored water and includes low-wattage electric backup. The series is aimed in part at homeowners considering a move from gas to electric water heating without assuming a new 240V water-heater circuit will be practical.

The 50-gallon HPTV is the narrowest of the three 120V Voltex models. It may be useful when floor space is limited and the expected hot-water use fits its 52-gallon first-hour rating. A.O. Smith lists 46 gallons of rated storage, a 52-gallon first-hour rating and 3.0 Uniform Energy Factor (UEF). The first-hour figure is a standardized measure of hot-water delivery, not the amount of water physically inside the tank. UEF is a test rating, not a guaranteed reduction in the household electric bill.

What makes this a 120V plug-in heat-pump water heater?

Unlike the conventional 240V electric tanks and other Voltex heat-pump models listed on WHE, this HPTV operates on 120V AC, single phase, with two 900W electric elements and a manufacturer-listed 900W maximum input. The manufacturer rates it for a 15-amp shared circuit, subject to the actual receptacle, GFCI protection, wiring, breaker and local electrical requirements being suitable. WHE checks the power location and the delivered unit’s nameplate before recommending installation. A nearby outlet by itself is not proof that the installation is compliant.

Lower-wattage backup means performance during sustained demand can differ from a 240V water heater. Its 46 gallons of rated storage and 52-gallon first-hour delivery need particular attention if several showers or appliances use hot water close together. In A.O. Smith’s comparison guide, the 50-gallon 120V model is placed near a smaller gas tank’s first-hour range; it should not automatically be sized as a drop-in replacement for every existing 50-gallon gas or electric heater.

Dimensions and comparing the three Voltex 120V sizes

The manufacturer’s September 2025 specification drawing lists this heater at 67.75 inches high by 22 inches in diameter, while its exact-model product page states 66 inches overall height. Those published figures differ, so we will measure the supplied unit and account for the water connections, ducting, handling and service access before confirming fit.

For different capacity needs, compare the 66-gallon HPTV-66 210 or the 80-gallon HPTV-80 210. The FPTU-50 130 is a distinct 208/240V Voltex heat-pump model with a 66-gallon first-hour rating and six-year limited warranty. Its electrical requirements and hot-water delivery are not interchangeable with this 120V HPTV.

The HPTV has ¾-inch hot and cold connections on top, which may help when replacing some gas storage heaters. However, the physical size, condensate system, water lines, expansion control, shutoff valve, drain pan and relief-valve discharge all require an individual installation assessment.

Airflow, condensate drainage and placement

A heat pump cools and dehumidifies surrounding air while operating. For a typical enclosed, unducted installation, A.O. Smith’s sizing sheet specifies 450 cubic feet of room volume. Smaller spaces may be possible with manufacturer-approved louvers, door undercuts or ducting; this is not a claim that every small closet can be used without modification. WHE checks intake and exhaust arrangements, the washable filter, installation clearances and how the unit will be serviced.

The heat pump produces condensate that needs its own compliant drain route. If a suitable gravity drain is unavailable, the installation may need a condensate pump and appropriate overflow protection. The condensate line should not be combined with the temperature-and-pressure relief discharge. We often discuss garage installations where the air space and drainage make sense, but confirm the conditions of the actual home.

Leak protection, smart features and warranty

The HPTV series includes leak detection and an automatic cold-water shutoff valve; the manufacturer’s installation manual describes fitting the included valve and sensor. It also provides a digital control, Efficiency/Hybrid/Electric operating modes, a CTA-2045 demand-response port and iCOMM smart-connectivity support. Depending on the connectivity function, an accessory module or compatible utility program may be required. Wi-Fi setup, rebates and utility savings should never be assumed to be available automatically.

A.O. Smith lists ENERGY STAR certification and a 10-year limited tank and parts warranty. The written warranty includes limited authorized-service labor during the first year under qualifying conditions, not 10 years of free labor. We review the equipment package, filter maintenance, condensate line, ongoing care and any local incentive eligibility before preparing a WHE estimate.

HPTV-50 210 frequently asked questions

Does this really work on a standard 120V outlet?

The HPTV-50 210 is designed for 120V plug-in operation with a 15-amp shared circuit under the manufacturer’s requirements. WHE still verifies the outlet, GFCI protection, circuit and local installation requirements rather than assuming any receptacle will be suitable.

How much water does the 50-gallon model store?

It has 46 gallons of rated storage and a 52-gallon first-hour rating. Those are different measurements: the latter is standardized hot-water delivery during the first hour, not physical tank capacity.

Can it replace an existing gas water heater?

It is intended in part for gas-to-electric conversions and uses top water connections, but suitable sizing, electrical supply, airflow, condensate drainage and other installation requirements must be reviewed. The old tank’s gallon label alone is not enough.

Does it include automatic leak shutoff?

A.O. Smith documents an included leak-detection sensor and automatic cold-water shutoff valve for the HPTV series. WHE verifies the supplied accessory package and installs the system according to the current manual.

Can WHE install it in Palm Beach Gardens or Jupiter?
