A large natural-gas tank for substantial peak demand
The Rheem PRO+G98-76N RH is a Professional Classic Plus Heavy Duty atmospheric water heater for natural gas. Its large storage volume makes it a candidate when a conventional gas tank struggles with concentrated hot-water use. WHE reviews overlapping showers, large bathtub fills and recovery between uses before recommending it for a home in Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter or nearby communities.
Moving to this size also changes the installation review. The gas supply, combustion air, vent system, access route and support all matter. A larger gallon label alone does not establish that it will fit or solve a household’s hot-water problem.
Verified storage, efficiency and recovery
| Nominal capacity / rated storage | 98 gallons / 93 gallons |
|---|---|
| Burner input | 75,100 BTU/h |
| Uniform Energy Factor | 0.58 UEF |
| First-hour rating | 142 gallons |
| Recovery at a 100°F temperature rise | 72.8 gallons per hour |
| Manufacturer warranty listing | Eight-year limited tank and parts warranty; application and certificate terms apply |
The model number contains “76,” but Rheem’s June 2025 row lists 75,100 BTU/h input. Its 98-gallon nominal designation also differs from the 93-gallon rated storage. The 142-gallon first-hour rating includes delivery supported by recovery; it is not the tank volume.
The published recovery rate uses a 100°F temperature rise. Many smaller heaters quote recovery at a 90°F rise, so those figures need a common basis before comparison. Rheem also lists 80% thermal efficiency for the series; that is a different measure from 0.58 UEF. Neither figure is a promise of a particular household’s fuel bill or delivery in every installation.
Dimensions and access for a 98-gallon replacement
Rheem lists a 64-inch tank height and 28¼-inch diameter, with 67⅞ inches to the vent connection. The gas connection is 14⅞ inches above the base. The top water connections are 11 inches apart and use 1-inch connections; the drawing shows a ½-inch gas connection. The side relief-valve connection is 57 3/16 inches high. Listed shipping weight is 350 pounds.
WHE checks door openings, the route to the installation area, support, drain-pan space and room to remove the old tank. We also measure the space above the heater for its draft hood and vent connector. The 64-inch tank height does not describe the complete installed height, and the 350-pound figure is shipping weight, not the filled operating weight.
Natural-gas supply and atmospheric venting
The manual identifies this as a Category I natural-draft appliance. It requires the factory draft hood and a suitable vent to the outdoors. The model’s specification row lists a 4-inch vent. WHE checks the complete vent system and combustion-air supply before deciding whether existing venting can be reused.
At 75,100 BTU/h, the heater needs a gas-supply review that includes other connected appliances. We check pressure, piping capacity, shutoff access and connections. The heater’s ½-inch gas connection does not, by itself, determine the correct upstream pipe size. A power-vent or direct-vent system requires a separate compatibility assessment.
Rheem specifies piezo ignition, and the manual shows a pilot and thermocouple system. This atmospheric model has no electric vent blower; WHE checks any separately powered accessories as part of the installation review. The manual excludes manufactured/mobile-home use.
The same-size propane version is PRO+G98-76P RH. Select the factory model that matches the fuel supply. The manual warns against converting the heater to a gas different from its rating plate.
Compare the 98-gallon and 75-gallon natural-gas models
| Model | Rated storage | First-hour rating | Tank height × diameter | UEF |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PRO+G98-76N RH | 93 gallons | 142 gallons | 64 × 28¼ inches | 0.58 |
| PRO+G75-76N RH | 73 gallons | 119 gallons | 60 × 26¼ inches | 0.63 |
Both list 75,100 BTU/h input and 72.8 GPH recovery at a 100°F rise. The 98-gallon model adds 20 gallons of rated storage and 23 gallons of first-hour delivery, while increasing tank height by 4 inches and diameter by 2 inches. It adds storage for a larger draw without increasing the listed recovery rate.
If hot water runs short during one large draw, added storage may help. If repeated demand leaves little recovery time, WHE also evaluates the pattern of use and alternative equipment. We compare the complete installation, not just the published tank size.
Service access and limited warranty
The series includes an anode rod, brass drain valve, Guardian combustion safety system and side water connections. Side connections require a properly designed application; their presence does not confirm compatibility with an existing loop. WHE considers water pressure, thermal expansion, relief-discharge routing and access for draining, anode service, burner checks and vent inspection.
The filter-free combustion system does not eliminate routine maintenance. Follow the manufacturer’s inspection and care instructions for the installed heater.
Rheem’s linked certificate lists eight years of limited tank and parts coverage for the original owner in a single-family dwelling, subject to its terms. It lists a one-year term for other installation applications and excludes service, repair and reinstallation labor, permits, and removal or disposal expenses. WHE verifies the applicable certificate and states any separate installation coverage in the estimate.
ProtectionPlus can extend the limited tank term to 12 years when applicable; it is optional. Availability, installed price and the proposed scope of work are confirmed for the individual job.

PRO+G98-76N RH frequently asked questions
Does this heater hold 98 gallons or 142 gallons?
It is a 98-gallon nominal model with 93 gallons rated storage. The 142-gallon first-hour rating measures delivery with recovery under the published test conditions.
Is the input 76,000 BTU/h?
The exact June 2025 specification row lists 75,100 BTU/h, even though “76” appears in the model number. WHE uses the published row and confirms the supplied unit’s rating plate.
Is 64 inches the total installed height?
No. That is the tank height. Rheem lists 67⅞ inches to the vent connection, and the installation also needs room for venting, piping, clearances and service.
Can it replace a power-vent heater?
Only after a full installation review establishes an appropriate venting arrangement. This model is atmospheric natural draft with a factory draft hood; compatibility with a power-vent system cannot be assumed.
Does the eight-year warranty include labor?
The linked manufacturer certificate excludes service and reinstallation labor and other listed expenses. Its eight-year tank-and-parts term applies to qualifying single-family installations and is subject to the certificate. WHE states any separate installation coverage in the estimate.
