A narrow 29-gallon natural-gas replacement option
The Rheem PROG29-32N RH63 is a tall Professional Classic atmospheric water heater for natural gas. Its 16½-inch tank diameter can be useful where width is limited. WHE considers that footprint alongside hot-water demand, the available vent arrangement and combustion air before recommending it for a home in Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter or nearby communities.
A narrow tank still needs space for piping, a draft hood and future service. We also ask why the existing heater is being replaced: a leaking tank and a household that regularly runs out of hot water can lead to different sizing decisions.
Capacity and performance of the exact natural-gas model
| Nominal capacity / rated storage | 29 gallons / 28 gallons |
|---|---|
| Fuel and burner input | Natural Gas, 32,000 BTU/h |
| Uniform Energy Factor | 0.60 UEF |
| First-hour rating | 63 gallons |
| Recovery at a 90°F temperature rise | 32.3 gallons per hour |
| Manufacturer warranty listing | Six-year limited tank and parts warranty |
Rheem’s exact model row distinguishes the 29-gallon nominal size from 28 gallons rated storage. The 63-gallon first-hour rating includes delivery supported by recovery during a standardized test; it does not mean the tank holds 63 gallons.
WHE reviews overlapping showers, large bathtub fills and the time between heavy uses. The published rating helps compare models, while real delivery depends on incoming water temperature, settings, fixture flow and demand. We do not size the replacement from a fixed shower count alone.
Tank height, vent height and installation space
The tank measures 56⅞ inches high by 16½ inches in diameter. Rheem lists 59¾ inches to the vent connection. The gas connection is 14¼ inches above the base, and the side relief-valve connection is 50¾ inches high. The two top water connections are 8 inches apart and use ¾-inch connections; the drawing shows a ½-inch gas connection. Published shipping weight is 110 pounds.
We measure the access opening and check space for the water connections, relief discharge, drain pan where required, and access to the controls and anode. The vent-connection height matters when a closet ceiling or existing vent connector is close above the tank. Required clearances and service space extend beyond the bare dimensions.
Natural-gas supply, venting and electrical considerations
This is a Category I natural-draft heater. The manual requires the factory draft hood and a suitable vent to the outdoors. The specification lists a 3- or 4-inch vent; WHE evaluates the complete vent design and combustion-air supply before recommending reuse of existing venting.
We check gas pressure, piping capacity, shutoff access and the needs of other connected appliances. The ½-inch appliance connection does not establish the correct size of every upstream gas line. A power-vent or direct-vent replacement requires a separate compatibility assessment.
The manual illustrates a pilot and piezo ignition system. This atmospheric heater has no electric vent blower; any separately powered accessories are checked during the installation review. Rheem’s manual excludes manufactured/mobile-home use.
The corresponding PROG29-30P RH63 propane model has a 30,000 BTU/h input and 30.3 GPH recovery, compared with this natural-gas model’s 32,000 BTU/h and 32.3 GPH. Both list the same first-hour rating and tank dimensions. The manual warns against converting between fuels.
Compare other Rheem natural-gas tank sizes
| Model | Rated storage | Tank height × diameter | First-hour rating | UEF |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PROG29-32N RH63 | 28 gallons | 56⅞ × 16½ inches | 63 gallons | 0.60 |
| PROG30S-30N RH63 | 29 gallons | 47 × 19¾ inches | 51 gallons | 0.60 |
| PROG40-40N RH62 | 38 gallons | 60 × 19½ inches | 84 gallons | 0.66 |
The short 30-gallon model trades a lower tank for a wider footprint and has a lower published first-hour rating. The 40-gallon model increases rated storage and delivery but needs more width and height, with a higher 40,000 BTU/h input. WHE compares those installation changes against the household’s actual need before choosing an alternative.
Maintenance and limited warranty
The series includes an anode rod, tank lining, sediment-control features and a brass drain valve. Its filter-free combustion safety system still needs the inspection and care described in the manual. WHE considers vent and burner inspection, draining, anode access, water pressure and thermal expansion when reviewing the installation.
Rheem lists a six-year limited tank-and-parts warranty, subject to the applicable Residential Warranty Certificate. ProtectionPlus tank-warranty extensions are optional. The tank-and-parts term should not be treated as a promise of installation-labor coverage; WHE confirms applicable equipment terms and any separate installation coverage in the estimate.
Availability and installed price depend on the equipment and work proposed for the job. We confirm those details after reviewing the installation.

PROG29-32N RH63 frequently asked questions
Is this model natural gas or propane?
PROG29-32N RH63 is natural gas. The propane counterpart is PROG29-30P RH63. Their inputs and recovery rates differ, and the heater must match the fuel on its rating plate.
Why does a 29-gallon heater list 28 gallons of storage?
Rheem publishes a nominal size class and a separate rated capacity. This model is nominally 29 gallons with 28 gallons rated storage. Its 63-gallon first-hour rating is a delivery measurement that includes recovery.
Will a 16½-inch-wide opening be enough?
The tank diameter alone does not establish installation clearance or access. WHE measures the opening and checks piping, the draft hood, required clearances and service space before confirming fit.
Is this the same as a short 30-gallon gas heater?
No. This is a tall, narrow 29-gallon model. The PROG30S-30N RH63 is lower and wider and has a different first-hour rating. The complete model number matters when comparing replacements.
Is a ten-year warranty included?
The standard manufacturer listing is six-year limited tank and parts coverage, subject to the certificate. ProtectionPlus tank extensions are optional, and any separate installation coverage is stated in the WHE estimate.
