A narrow atmospheric propane tank for smaller storage needs

The Rheem PROG29-30P RH63 is the propane (LP) version of Rheem’s tall 29-gallon Professional Classic atmospheric water heater. Its narrow 16½-inch tank diameter makes it a candidate where a wider tank is difficult to accommodate, provided the installation has suitable venting, combustion air and propane supply.

WHE checks both space and demand before recommending it for a home in Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter or nearby communities. A smaller tank may suit the installation, but overlapping showers or a large tub can change the storage and recovery needed.

Verified LP capacity, input and delivery

Nominal capacity / rated storage 29 gallons / 28 gallons
Fuel and burner input Propane, 30,000 BTU/h
Uniform Energy Factor 0.60 UEF
First-hour rating 63 gallons
Recovery at a 90°F temperature rise 30.3 gallons per hour
Manufacturer warranty listing Six-year limited tank and parts warranty

The 29-gallon label is the nominal size; Rheem lists 28 gallons rated storage. Its 63-gallon first-hour rating is a delivery measurement that includes recovery, not the amount of water held in the tank. Published recovery is 30.3 GPH at a 90°F temperature rise.

We ask when hot water runs short and which fixtures operate together. Those details are more useful for sizing than treating a manufacturer’s general shower estimate as a guarantee. Actual delivery varies with inlet temperature, settings and use.

Propane supply and correct fuel selection

WHE reviews the propane supply, regulator arrangement, gas pressure, piping capacity and shutoff access. We consider the load of other gas appliances as part of that review. The heater’s ½-inch gas connection is not a complete sizing instruction for the upstream supply.

The PROG29-32N RH63 natural-gas counterpart has the same nominal capacity, dimensions, UEF and first-hour rating. It uses a different fuel and lists 32,000 BTU/h input with 32.3 GPH recovery. This propane model lists 30,000 BTU/h and 30.3 GPH. Rheem’s manual warns against converting the heater to another gas type.

Dimensions and overhead space

The tank measures 56⅞ inches high by 16½ inches in diameter. Rheem lists 59¾ inches to the vent connection. The gas connection is 14¼ inches above the base, and the side relief-valve connection is 50¾ inches high. The two top water connections are 8 inches apart and use ¾-inch connections; the drawing shows a ½-inch gas connection. Published shipping weight is 110 pounds.

For a narrow closet or utility area, we check room beside the tank for connections and service as well as the height above it. Water piping, the relief discharge and a drain pan where required need space. We also plan access for the gas control, drain valve and anode.

Atmospheric venting and electrical needs

This model is a Category I natural-draft appliance using the factory draft hood and a suitable vent to the outdoors. Rheem lists a 3- or 4-inch vent in the model row. WHE checks vent condition, sizing, routing and draft together with combustion-air provisions before confirming a replacement.

A power-vent or direct-vent installation has different requirements and needs a separate compatibility review. The manual shows a pilot and piezo ignition system; this atmospheric model has no electric vent blower. We check any separately powered accessories during the installation review. The manual excludes manufactured/mobile-home use.

Compare the 29 with larger Rheem propane tanks

Model Rated storage Tank height × diameter First-hour rating Input
PROG29-30P RH63 28 gallons 56⅞ × 16½ inches 63 gallons 30,000 BTU/h
PROG40-36P RH62 38 gallons 60 × 19½ inches 84 gallons 36,000 BTU/h
PROG50-36P RH60 48 gallons 58⅜ × 20½ inches 85 gallons 36,000 BTU/h

The 40-gallon option adds 10 gallons of rated storage but requires a taller and wider tank location. The 50-gallon RH60 has still more storage with a wider footprint, yet its published first-hour rating is only one gallon above the listed 40-gallon model. WHE evaluates the full performance and installation details rather than assuming delivery rises in direct proportion to the gallon label.

Care and six-year limited coverage

Rheem lists an anode rod, protective tank lining, sediment-control features and a brass drain valve. The filter-free combustion system does not remove the need for inspection and maintenance. WHE considers sediment, anode access, burner and vent condition, water pressure, thermal expansion and relief-discharge routing during the installation and service review.

Rheem lists a six-year limited tank-and-parts warranty, subject to the applicable Residential Warranty Certificate. ProtectionPlus tank-warranty extensions are optional. The tank-and-parts term should not be treated as a promise of installation-labor coverage; WHE confirms applicable equipment terms and any separate installation coverage in the estimate.

Availability and installed price depend on the equipment and work proposed for the job. We confirm those details after reviewing the installation.

PROG29-30P RH63 frequently asked questions

Is this the LP version?

Yes. PROG29-30P RH63 is the propane (LP) model, with 30,000 BTU/h input. The natural-gas model is PROG29-32N RH63, and the manufacturer warns against fuel conversion.

Does the 63-gallon first-hour rating mean it holds 63 gallons?

No. Rated storage is 28 gallons within the 29-gallon nominal class. First-hour rating includes delivery supported by recovery during the published test.

How much height does the installation need?

The tank is 56⅞ inches high, and Rheem lists 59¾ inches to the vent connection. The final installation needs additional room for venting, piping, clearances and service access.

Can it use the vent from my existing propane heater?

That depends on the existing equipment and vent system. This is a natural-draft heater with a factory draft hood and a listed 3- or 4-inch vent. WHE checks the full arrangement and combustion air before recommending reuse.

Is the limited warranty six years or ten years?

The standard listing is six-year limited tank and parts coverage, subject to the warranty certificate. ProtectionPlus tank extensions are optional and should be identified separately in an estimate.
