Is the VSCE62-65R 250 right for your application?
The American VSCE62-65R 250 is the smallest of the three light-service commercial models in this range. American’s detailed specifications list 66 gallons nominal capacity and 59.5 gallons of rated storage, despite the 65-gallon wording in the product title. Its 22-inch diameter makes it the narrowest option.
This is a 277V, single-phase, 12.2 kW commercial configuration. Electrical compatibility is a key part of choosing it; an existing 240V water-heater circuit is not a direct match.
This model is designed for intermittent commercial hot-water loads. WHE checks the volume needed during the busiest draw, the time between draws and the building’s electrical supply. Its smaller stored reserve may suit a lighter peak demand, but selecting it only because it fits the room can leave the system undersized.

The current product page identifies VSCE62-65R 250 and lists 66 gallons nominal capacity. The April 2022 series sheet instead labels its 66-gallon row VSCE62 65H. Its listed body dimensions agree with the current page, but the model suffix differs. WHE verifies the exact supplied model and its documents before ordering; the two names should not be assumed interchangeable.
Electrical supply and installation planning
The series is factory wired for simultaneous operation, so both 6.1 kW elements contribute to the 12.2 kW connected load. WHE verifies the actual nameplate, available voltage and electrical installation requirements before confirming equipment. The installation manual calls for a separate grounded branch circuit, over-current protection and a disconnect; a qualified electrical professional determines the required circuit and conductor sizes.
The body dimensions do not include every part of the installation space. Allow for the drain pan, top piping and electrical connection, relief discharge, anode removal and access to both front panels. The manual calls for at least four inches of access to replaceable parts and enough additional room for servicing. WHE also checks full-tank support, water pressure, thermal expansion and the drainage route.
The thermostat’s listed adjustment range is approximately 120–181°F. That is an equipment capability, not a recommended delivery temperature. The application may require temperature control and thermostatic mixing valves to keep fixture temperatures safe; higher storage settings need a complete system review.
Recovery rating and document differences
The June 2024 Series 250 manual lists 56 gallons per hour at a 90°F rise for simultaneous 6,100W/6,100W operation. The older April 2022 NCESS00116 sheet lists 50 GPH at that same rise. This guide uses the newer manual for comparison and flags the disagreement so the required output can be confirmed before sizing a job.
A temperature rise is the difference between entering water temperature and the target water temperature. More rise reduces hourly recovery. Rated storage, recovery and first-hour delivery are different measurements; these sources do not provide a first-hour rating for this exact product. Likewise, 98% thermal efficiency should not be treated as a UEF score when comparing it with residential tanks or heat-pump models.
Compare the three American light-service sizes
| Model | Nominal / rated storage | Height × diameter | Supply / total input |
|---|---|---|---|
| VSCE62-65R 250 | 66 / 59.5 gal | 60¼ × 22 in. | 277V / 12.2 kW |
| VSCE62-80H 250 | 80 / 72 gal | 60½ × 24 in. | 277V / 12.2 kW |
| VSCE62-119R 250 | 119 / 108 gal | 61½ × 28 in. | 277V / 12.2 kW |
The 80-gallon model adds 12.5 gallons of rated storage and two inches of diameter, with only ¼ inch more body height. The 119-gallon version adds substantially more reserve but needs a 28-inch-diameter body and a larger installation footprint.
All three share the same listed 277V supply, 12.2 kW input and recovery table. Moving to a larger size adds stored reserve. It does not increase the heating input or the published recovery rate.
Maintenance and limited warranty
The series uses a glass-lined tank, anode protection, zinc-plated copper-sheathed heating elements and a brass drain valve. Keep the service panels, drain valve and anode accessible. Flushing, scale control and anode inspection should follow the manual and the site’s water conditions.
The current product page and series sheet list six years of limited tank coverage and one year for parts. The warranty download supplied on the page carries VSCE32 model names in its heading, while this product is VSCE62. Confirm the applicable certificate for the exact supplied unit. The linked terms exclude service labor, installation, shipping and other related costs; six-year tank coverage does not mean six-year parts or labor coverage.
Manufacturer sources and local installation
Sources checked October 17, 2026: the official VSCE62-65R 250 product page, NCESS00116 light-service specification sheet, Series 250 installation and service manual 100380318 and linked light-service limited warranty. American uses the same representative photograph for all three capacities; actual dimensions vary.

American VSCE62-65R 250 FAQs
Why does the model name say 65 when the guide says 66 gallons?
American’s current model is VSCE62-65R 250. Its detailed specifications and capacity selector list 66 gallons nominal, while rated storage is 59.5 gallons. The older series sheet uses VSCE62 65H for its 66-gallon row, so the full nameplate must be checked.
Can it use my existing 240V water-heater circuit?
The linked configuration is rated 277V single phase with 12.2 kW connected input. It is not a direct 240V replacement. WHE and the electrical professional must verify the supply and exact equipment nameplate before selecting the heater.
What recovery rate should I use?
The June 2024 Series 250 manual lists 56 GPH at a 90°F rise; the April 2022 sheet lists 50 GPH at that rise. This guide identifies both and uses the newer manual for comparison. Confirm the required output for the actual application before ordering.
Will a larger size recover hot water faster?
These three models share the same 12.2 kW input and recovery table. The larger tank provides more stored reserve; it does not increase the published hourly recovery rate.
Does the six-year warranty cover parts and labor?
The current product page lists six years for the tank and one year for parts. The linked warranty excludes labor and related installation costs and has older model names in its heading. Verify the certificate supplied with the exact VSCE62 unit.
