Heat-Pump Water Heater Tax Credit: What Changed After 2025

The federal Section 25C tax credit is not available for a heat-pump water heater placed in service after December 31, 2025. If you are planning a new installation in 2026, do not deduct the former $2,000 credit from your expected project cost. The IRS confirms the revised expiration date.

2025 installations and 2026 purchases: which rules apply?

Older articles and manufacturer materials may describe a credit continuing through 2032. That timetable changed. A product described as tax-credit eligible in older literature does not establish eligibility for a new installation today.

Your situationWhat it means
Qualifying heater placed in service in 2025Potential 2025 credit, subject to equipment and taxpayer requirements.
Purchased in 2025 but first placed in service in 2026Not eligible for Section 25C; purchase timing alone does not preserve the credit.
New installation in 2026The former federal heat-pump water heater credit is unavailable.
Preparing a return in 2026 for a 2025 installationCheck the 2025 rules. Filing year and installation year are different.

For qualifying equipment installed in 2025

The former credit generally covered 30% of qualified costs, including eligible installation labor, subject to a $2,000 annual limit shared by qualifying heat pumps, heat-pump water heaters and biomass equipment. Installing both an eligible HVAC heat pump and a heat-pump water heater did not create a separate $2,000 allowance for each.

For example, $4,000 in qualifying costs would produce a $1,200 calculation before other limitations. That is an illustration, not a WHE installation quote or a guaranteed credit.

The credit was nonrefundable, limited by the applicable tax liability, and unused Section 25C credit could not carry forward. Rebates or subsidies could also affect qualified costs. The IRS credit guide explains these limitations.

Records to gather for a completed 2025 project

Use the 2025 Form 5695 instructions for the return’s requirements. Heat-pump water heater expenses are addressed in Part II, including lines 29c and 29d. Gather:

  • An itemized invoice, payment records and the date installation was completed.
  • The exact model and manufacturer’s written qualification certification for the installation year.
  • The four-character Qualified Manufacturer Identification Number (QMID) required for specified property installed in 2025.
  • Records of related rebates, subsidies and other improvements that may share the annual credit limit.

The heater needed to meet the applicable Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE) criteria. A generic ENERGY STAR claim, a retailer’s advertisement or the tank’s gallon size is not a substitute for checking that model’s eligibility. Have your tax preparer review the project and your household’s circumstances.

Florida rebates are separate from the expired tax credit

Status checked October 15, 2026: Florida’s official High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebates (HEEHR) page lists a heat-pump water heater rebate ceiling of $1,750, but still says its pilot is expected to launch in the future and the full program would follow. It invites registration for application-opening updates.

The published program is income-qualified and subject to project-cost limits. Do not treat the listed maximum as an available discount on a WHE estimate. Confirm the current opening status, household eligibility, qualified equipment, contractor rules and any required approval before purchasing. Registration for updates is not a rebate approval.

Does FPL offer a heat-pump water heater credit?

FPL’s advertised $200 heat-pump rebate concerns home heating-and-cooling equipment, with indoor and outdoor units and HVAC efficiency requirements. It is not a domestic heat-pump water heater rebate. If you find a separate offer, verify the exact program and equipment requirements with its administrator.

Planning a replacement in Palm Beach County

Start with the full installed price and the needs of your household. When speaking with WHE, have the current model number, a photo of the installation area and a description of any hot-water problems ready. We can use those details to discuss the replacement options and what should be checked at the property.

Our hybrid and heat-pump water heater installation page is the starting point for equipment questions. The electric-to-hybrid replacement checklist covers installation planning. Compare operating-cost expectations and the complete project price without assuming an unapproved incentive.

Frequently asked questions

Can I claim the old credit for a 2026 installation?

No. Section 25C does not cover property placed in service after December 31, 2025.

What if I paid for the heater in 2025 but installed it in 2026?

Payment or purchase in 2025 alone does not qualify a heater first placed in service in 2026.

Can I still review a completed 2025 installation when filing in 2026?

Yes. A qualifying 2025 project is evaluated under the 2025 rules. If a return was already filed without the credit, ask your tax preparer whether an amended return is appropriate for your circumstances.

Did every 50-gallon hybrid or Home Depot model qualify?

No. Capacity, retailer and brand alone did not establish eligibility. Check the exact model, applicable efficiency criteria, installation year and manufacturer documentation.

Was the $2,000 amount guaranteed?

No. It was the annual category ceiling, not an automatic rebate. The eligible percentage, shared category limit and tax-liability limit could reduce the amount.

Does FPL’s advertised heat-pump rebate cover my water heater?

The $200 program linked above is for qualifying home heating-and-cooling equipment. It should not be included in a domestic water-heater estimate.

Can I count on Florida’s $1,750 heat-pump water heater rebate now?

As checked October 15, 2026, the official HEEHR page still describes a future pilot launch. Confirm program opening, eligibility and approval requirements directly before relying on a discount.
