Is the A.O. Smith FCG-100 401 right for your water heater replacement?
The A.O. Smith ProLine FCG-100 401 is a high-capacity, high-recovery Propane (LP) atmospheric-vent storage water heater marketed in the 100-gallon class category. It is built for homes with substantial hot-water demand, but a high-capacity tank is not automatically a safe like-for-like replacement. Water Heating Experts reviews your hot-water use, combustion air, fuel supply, vent system, room access and installation conditions before recommending equipment in Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter and neighboring areas.
A.O. Smith lists 98 gallons nominal capacity, 95 gallons rated storage, a 170-gallon first-hour rating and 0.58 Uniform Energy Factor (UEF). Its maximum gas input is 75,100 BTU per hour, with approximately 81 gallons per hour recovery at a 90°F temperature rise. The first-hour rating is a standardized delivery measurement—not the amount physically held inside the tank or a guarantee of unlimited hot water. The manufacturer also lists 80% thermal efficiency, a separate efficiency measure from UEF.
Capacity, tank dimensions and choosing a size
The exact-model page lists approximately 65 inches high by 27.75 inches in diameter and 340 pounds shipping weight. These are not complete installed dimensions: the draft hood, connector, water piping, gas piping and room for maintenance and replacement all require space. A filled tank is substantially heavier than its shipping weight, and the access path and supporting surface must be suitable.
The larger tank can be worthwhile in a high-demand home or multi-fixture installation, but 98 gallons nominal/95 rated storage and a 170-gallon first-hour rating do not remove the need to check the space, venting and propane fuel supply. The FCG-100 400 is the natural-gas counterpart, not the same fuel model. The FCG-75 401 propane model offers less rated storage with a narrower cabinet and a lower first-hour rating. If you are considering a change in fuel or tank size, we can also compare smaller FCG-75 401 propane model after checking your existing system rather than assuming either has equivalent performance or connection requirements.
Atmospheric venting and combustion air are essential
The FCG series uses an atmospheric draft hood and natural-draft venting. It is not a power-vent, direct-vent, sealed-combustion or tankless heater. WHE inspects available combustion and dilution air, draft-hood clearance, chimney or vent connector, material, slope, termination, potential shared-venting changes, and applicable local code requirements.
Manufacturer vent-size discrepancy: The current exact-model product page identifies a 5-inch flue diameter, while A.O. Smith’s May 2021 ProLine High Recovery specification sheet AOSRG47002 identifies a 4-inch draft-hood outlet. Do not choose or modify a vent based on either unqualified figure. The actual delivered draft hood, listed accessories and current installation instructions must determine the required vent system. WHE will check these details before specifying a replacement.
Propane (LP) supply, fittings and safety
We verify the propane supply, regulator pressures, all appliance demand on the LP system, sizing of the supply piping and the exact heater fuel designation. The FCG-100 401 is not a natural-gas appliance and should not be represented as field-converted equipment. A.O. Smith lists 1¼-inch potable-water connections for this model. The standard FCG model does not include the optional side-mounted recirculation connections of the FCG-75L variant. We inspect existing hot and cold piping, gas connections, shutoffs, temperature-and-pressure relief discharge, thermal expansion control and access for service.
The heater uses a pilot with piezo ignition and automatic controls with safety shutoff; the standard control arrangement does not require an electrical outlet. The tank is listed for residential applications. The heater vessel is not ASME-certified even though its temperature-and-pressure relief valve is ASME rated; project-specific requirements need confirmation.
Tank features, maintenance and warranty
A.O. Smith lists its Green Choice low-NOx burner, Blue Diamond glass lining, stainless-core CoreGard anode, DynaClean sediment-reduction design, factory-installed nipples and an enhanced-flow brass drain valve. These features do not remove the need for maintenance, safe vent operation or attention to water conditions.
The FCG-100 401 carries a six-year limited tank and six-year limited parts warranty under the manufacturer’s written terms. This is the FCG six-year model—not the PCG ten-year variant. Manufacturer coverage does not automatically include installation or future service labor. WHE confirms model availability, the installation scope and any applicable labor coverage with your estimate.
FCG-100 401 frequently asked questions
How much water does this 100-gallon class heater actually hold?
A.O. Smith lists 98 gallons nominal capacity and 95 gallons rated storage, with a separate 170-gallon first-hour rating for standardized hot-water delivery. Model class and actual tank volume are not identical measurements.
Is this heater for propane or natural gas?
The exact FCG-100 401 is for Propane (LP). Do not substitute the other fuel version based on similar capacity or BTU ratings. WHE verifies the delivered fuel label, compatible controls, regulator and gas supply before recommending installation.
Does the heater need a 4-inch or 5-inch vent?
The current model page lists a 5-inch flue and the older AOSRG47002 specification sheet shows a 4-inch draft-hood outlet. Because those manufacturer sources conflict, WHE must verify the actual appliance, supplied draft hood and current installation manual before selecting a vent connector or changing an existing vent system.
Can this replace a power-vent or direct-vent heater?
Not as an assumed direct replacement. The FCG series uses atmospheric draft-hood venting; power-vent and direct-vent appliances have different requirements. The existing vent route, combustion air and gas supply must be checked, and another product may be more appropriate.
Can WHE install this model in Palm Beach Gardens or Jupiter?
WHE reviews water-heater replacements in Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter and nearby Palm Beach County communities. Send the model number and photos of the current unit, venting and fuel connections in your free estimate request. We confirm equipment suitability, availability, installation scope and scheduling before any work.
