Is the A.O. Smith FPTU-66 130 right for your home?
The A.O. Smith ProLine XE Voltex FPTU-66 130 is a 66-gallon nominal hybrid electric heat-pump water heater. Its compressor transfers heat from surrounding air into the water, while electric resistance heating elements are available when conditions or hot-water demand require them. Water Heating Experts considers household use, available space, air circulation, drainage and electrical requirements before recommending an installation in Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter or nearby communities.
The manufacturer lists 67 gallons of rated storage, a 79-gallon first-hour rating and 3.42 Uniform Energy Factor (UEF). Rated storage is water physically held in the tank. First-hour rating is measured delivery under standardized test conditions, and UEF is tested energy efficiency—not a guaranteed operating cost or personal savings figure.
Who may benefit from the 66-gallon Voltex?
This middle size may suit households whose peak demand exceeds what the 50-gallon model can comfortably deliver, without the extra height of the 80-gallon unit. Compared with the 50-gallon model, it is two inches shorter but 4½ inches wider, and its 79-gallon first-hour rating provides greater standardized delivery. The 80-gallon model is taller still, with additional storage.
The 50-gallon FPTU-50 130 and 80-gallon FPTU-80 130 are distinct equipment models. WHE checks your peak hot-water use and the physical installation before choosing among them.
Dimensions, airflow and condensate drainage
The FPTU-66 130 measures 61 inches high and 26.5 inches in diameter with ¾-inch side water connections. It is not a direct size-for-size swap for every conventional 66-gallon tank. The heat pump requires adequate air volume, access to its removable air filter, clearances for servicing and a condensate drain or suitable condensate pump. The manufacturer calls for at least six inches of clearance from every side and above, and recommends more room for service. Closets and other confined spaces require special provisions for air exchange.
The compressor cools and dehumidifies surrounding air when running, so WHE discusses the chosen installation location, often a garage, and the effects on nearby living space. We also review the drain pan, relief-valve discharge, removal route, piping and whether a condensate pump would be needed. The 66-gallon family uses dual anodes according to the A.O. Smith specification sheet.
Power supply and operating modes
A.O. Smith specifies a 208/240-volt single-phase supply on a 30-amp breaker for this family, with electric backup elements and a maximum listed electrical input of 4,500 watts. We verify the delivered unit’s nameplate and the existing electrical circuit before quoting. Operating modes include Efficiency, Hybrid, Electric and Vacation, selected through an electronic display with status and diagnostic messages.
The heat pump may switch to resistance-element heating when ambient conditions are outside its operating range or demand is high. The filter and condensate lines need ongoing maintenance. This model is ENERGY STAR certified, but we do not promise a specific rebate or dollar savings; program eligibility and actual energy use depend on current local rules and household conditions.
Tank care and warranty
A.O. Smith describes Blue Diamond glass lining, CoreGard anodes, DynaClean sediment-reduction features and a brass drain valve. These do not eliminate maintenance or water-quality issues. This specific FPTU model has a six-year limited tank and parts warranty, subject to written terms. Installation labor, equipment availability and final pricing are confirmed separately.
FPTU-66 130 frequently asked questions
How much water does the 66-gallon Voltex actually store?
The nominal capacity is 66 gallons and the manufacturer lists 67 gallons of rated storage. The 79-gallon first-hour rating is a separate standardized delivery measurement.
Is this a conventional electric tank?
No. It is a hybrid heat-pump water heater, using surrounding-air heat with electric backup elements. It also needs adequate airflow and condensate drainage.
Can WHE put this water heater in a closet?
Not in a closed, unventilated small space. An enclosed installation needs adequate air exchange or an approved alternative arrangement under the exact installation manual, plus required access and drainage.
Does it need a condensate pump?
Not always. It needs proper condensate drainage. If an adequate gravity drain is unavailable or above the condensate outlet, a suitable condensate pump may be required.
Can WHE install it in Palm Beach Gardens or Jupiter?
