Is the A.O. Smith GPVT-50 200 right for your replacement?
The A.O. Smith ProLine XE GPVT-50 200 is a 50-gallon, 50,000 BTU/h natural gas power-vent storage water heater. Its powered exhaust allows approved vent configurations that differ from an atmospheric draft-hood heater, but safe installation still depends on compatible gas service, a 120-volt electrical supply, combustion air and a correctly designed exhaust termination. Water Heating Experts checks those requirements, as well as household hot-water demand and access, before recommending a replacement in Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter and surrounding communities.
A.O. Smith lists 50 gallons nominal capacity, 48 gallons rated storage, a 97-gallon first-hour rating and 0.72 Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) for this exact model. It specifies 50,000 BTU per hour maximum natural gas input and approximately 56 gallons per hour of recovery at a 90°F temperature rise. The first-hour rating is a standardized delivery measure rather than the amount of water physically inside the tank or a promise of continuous hot water.
Dimensions and installation space
A.O. Smith’s April 2023 power-vent specification drawing measures the GPVT-50 at 68⅛ inches high including the power-vent blower, 58¾ inches to the tank top and 22 inches in diameter. The model has 1-inch hot and cold top connections. Allow extra room for the blower outlet, venting and fittings, electrical and water connections, relief-valve discharge, anode service and safe removal of the old heater.
Unlike the 75-gallon GPVX-75L high-input natural-gas model, the GPVT-50 200/201 configuration has no standard side-loop connections. A GPVT-50L is a separate variant with side connections; it is not what this guide covers. A.O. Smith also offers a 40-gallon GPVT and a 62,000 BTU/h GPVX-50L, but those are distinct models with different performance and dimensions.
Power-vent exhaust, combustion air and electrical supply
The GPVT-50 uses an electrically driven blower with a rotatable outlet and an electronic hot-surface ignition system. Its manufacturer product table lists a 120V supply and 5 amps. WHE verifies an appropriate power source and whether the installation meets the applicable electrical requirements. Without electricity, a blower-equipped water heater cannot operate like a standing-pilot atmospheric-vent tank.
The April 2023 A.O. Smith power-vent sheet lists 2-inch, 3-inch and 4-inch vent pipe options with maximum equivalent lengths of 50, 125 and 180 feet respectively for the GPVT-50 series. Those are upper limits in a manufacturer table, not a guarantee that any proposed pipe route is permitted. Vent material, pipe sizing, elbows, blower outlet, slope, support, termination, altitude and nearby air openings must follow the supplied unit’s current manual and local code.
This is a power-vent model, not power-direct-vent or sealed combustion. Combustion air must be considered separately. WHE checks the existing vent arrangement and does not assume an old atmospheric-vent flue or a power-direct-vent system can be reused.
Fuel requirements and comparisons
This model uses Natural Gas. WHE verifies that the natural-gas meter and supply line can support the 50,000 BTU/h burner along with other appliances. The GPVT-50 200 is not the propane model. The GPVT-50 201 propane (LP) version is a different factory fuel configuration. These two must not be interchanged just because their ratings are similar.
The separate GCR-50 400 is a natural-gas atmospheric-vent tank, not a powered-exhaust model. Even where both are 50 gallons nominal, gas input, combustion air, vent routing and electricity needs differ. WHE compares available overhead space, suitable vent termination, gas supply, household demand and the work involved before selecting the equipment.
Tank protection, care and warranty
Manufacturer-listed features include a low-NOx Green Choice gas burner, electronic operating controls with status light, Blue Diamond glass lining, CoreGard anode, DynaClean sediment-reduction design and an enhanced-flow brass drain valve. Proper maintenance and inspection of the blower, vent, anode and other safety components remain important.
A.O. Smith provides a six-year limited tank and parts warranty, subject to its written terms. This does not automatically cover removal, new venting, installation or ongoing service labor. WHE confirms any applicable installation coverage, model availability, pricing and scheduling with an estimate.
Manufacturer-source note: The exact A.O. Smith GPVT-50 200 product page, AOSRG45601 power-vent spec sheet (April 2023), power-vent 40/50-gallon installation manual 100366731, and residential limited warranty provide model information. The propane description states 90 gallons first-hour rating, but its technical table and the manufacturer spec sheet show 97 gallons. This guide uses the technical-table figure and asks installers to verify the actual unit and current manual.
GPVT-50 200 frequently asked questions
Is this the 50,000 BTU model?
Yes. The GPVT-50 200 is the 50-gallon nominal natural gas power-vent model with 50,000 BTU/h input. It is not the 40,000 BTU/h GPVL-50 or the 62,000 BTU/h GPVX-50L.
How much hot water does it store and deliver?
A.O. Smith lists 48 gallons of rated storage in the 50-gallon nominal tank, with a 97-gallon first-hour delivery rating. The first-hour figure is a standardized test result rather than the tank’s physical capacity.
Does it require electricity to run?
Yes. The electronic ignition and power-vent blower use a 120V electrical supply. The manufacturer lists 5 amps. WHE verifies the actual electrical connection and installation requirements.
Can this replace my existing atmospheric-vent gas heater?
Possibly, but not as a vent-for-vent swap. WHE must check the approved exhaust pipe route and termination, combustion air, overhead clearance, electricity and gas supply. A different model may be more appropriate.
Does it include side connections for recirculation?
No. The standard GPVT-50 200 is listed without a side loop. A GPVT-50L is a separate model. If recirculation is needed, WHE evaluates compatible equipment and pump, valve and piping requirements.
