Is the A.O. Smith GPVX-75L 311 right for your water heater replacement?
The A.O. Smith ProLine XE GPVX-75L 311 is a 75-gallon nominal propane (LP) power-vent storage water heater with a higher-input burner and factory-installed blower. Its powered exhaust can provide vent-routing options that an atmospheric draft-hood heater does not, but the replacement still needs a compatible fuel supply, electrical outlet, combustion air and a properly designed vent system. Water Heating Experts evaluates those details along with your home’s hot-water needs before recommending equipment in Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter and neighboring communities.
A.O. Smith lists 72 gallons rated storage, a 116-gallon first-hour rating, 76,000 BTU/h maximum propane (LP) input and 0.69 Uniform Energy Factor (UEF). The first-hour rating measures standardized hot-water delivery; it does not describe the amount physically stored or guarantee uninterrupted showers. A.O. Smith’s 2023 specification sheet rounds recovery to approximately 80 gallons per hour at a 90°F rise, while its product description says 80.4 GPH and its online technical field reports 84. We treat these as manufacturer source differences to verify against the delivered unit rather than promise a precise real-world recovery rate.
Size, blower clearance and installation access
The tank measures 61¼ inches to the tank top and 26 inches in diameter. With the blower assembly, the published specification drawing gives approximately 70⅝ inches overall height. That larger number matters in garages and equipment closets with limited headroom. Additional clearance may be necessary for plumbing connections, blower outlet rotation, vent fittings, the temperature-and-pressure relief discharge, anode service and eventual removal.
The top hot and cold water connections are ¾ inch. The “L” in GPVX-75L denotes standard side-loop connections suitable for approved recirculation or combination potable-water/space-heating applications when designed under the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable codes. Their presence does not include a recirculation pump, controls or a preassembled heating system.
Power venting and the 120V blower
Unlike an atmospheric-vent heater, this model uses a 120-volt power-vent blower with electronic hot-surface ignition; A.O. Smith lists a 5-amp draw. WHE checks the electrical supply, access for servicing the blower and any applicable safety requirements. The blower exhaust must terminate at an approved location with correctly sized, supported and sloped venting and specified clearances from doors, windows, air openings and other obstructions. This is power vent, not power direct vent: combustion air still needs to be addressed for the installation.
Vent-diameter documentation needs interpretation. A.O. Smith’s current online product table says “5-inch flue diameter,” while the April 2023 AOSRG45601 power-vent sheet provides 3-inch and 4-inch vent pipe options, with published maximum equivalent lengths of 50 feet and 125 feet respectively for GPVX-75L. Those distances are not permission to use an arbitrary vent run: fittings, materials, termination, altitude and the current installation manual control the actual design. WHE checks the exact blower connection and approved pipe size instead of treating the online flue-diameter field as the required vent pipe size.
Gas supply and comparison with other 75-gallon heaters
This is the Propane (LP) configuration. WHE verifies the propane tank and regulator configuration, gas pressures, pipe sizing and combined appliance demand before recommending this 76,000 BTU/h LP model. The natural-gas GPVX-75L 310 has a different factory fuel configuration and must not be substituted simply because the ratings are similar.
For comparison, the FCG-75 401 propane model uses an atmospheric draft hood rather than a powered blower. Similar capacity and fuel do not make these two systems interchangeable. Another comparison is the GPVX-75L 310, which uses natural gas—not propane. The GPVX-75L 310 Natural Gas model is the separate fuel version, not a second performance setting on the same heater. WHE may also compare other tank sizes or a suitable tankless water heater where venting or installation access makes the GPVX impractical.
Tank protection, service and warranty
A.O. Smith lists a low-NOx burner, electronic gas controls, Blue Diamond glass-lined tank, CoreGard anode rod, DynaClean sediment-reduction dip tube and brass drain valve. This non-condensing power-vent unit still needs routine inspection of the venting, blower, anode and safety devices. A.O. Smith lists six-year limited tank and parts warranties, subject to the written terms. Manufacturer coverage does not automatically pay for removal, installation labor or every service expense.
GPVX-75L 311 frequently asked questions
Is the GPVX-75L 311 for natural gas or propane?
It is the Propane (LP) model. The natural gas counterpart is GPVX-75L 310. The fuel designation must be verified against the delivered heater’s nameplate and the building’s fuel system before installation.
Can I replace an atmospheric-vent water heater with this power-vent model?
Sometimes, but it is not a direct vent-for-vent swap. WHE reviews the gas supply, 120V electrical power, combustion-air requirements, approved exhaust routing and termination, and available space. Reconfiguration of venting and piping may be needed.
How tall is this heater with its blower?
The tank top is approximately 61¼ inches above the floor; the 2023 A.O. Smith dimensional drawing shows 70⅝ inches to the top of the blower. Additional installation and service space must be considered.
Does the GPVX-75L include a recirculation pump?
No. The “L” model provides side-loop fittings that may be used in a properly designed recirculation or approved combination heating application. The loop’s pump, check valves, controls and necessary piping are separately selected and installed.
Does the GPVX-75L use a 5-inch exhaust pipe?
Not necessarily. The website’s “5-inch flue diameter” field does not replace the detailed venting instructions. A.O. Smith’s power-vent sheet lists 3- and 4-inch pipe options for this model, subject to equivalent-length limits and current installation instructions. WHE confirms the correct vent configuration for the actual unit and location.
