Ruud Professional Achiever Standard Electric models

Our guides cover four tall, three medium and five short configurations. Each identifies the complete model, nominal and rated capacity, electrical configuration and dimensions. Ruud’s “medium” and “short” labels describe different groups; compare the actual measurements before ordering.

Include the insulation blanket when measuring

The PROE28 S2 RU95 B and PROE38 S2 RU95 B include insulation blankets required for their listed UEF. Ruud’s bare-tank dimensions exclude these blankets. Applying the sheet’s allowances gives calculated insulated body envelopes of about 32½ × 24¾ inches for the 28 B and 33½ × 27 inches for the 38 B. The pan, connections and service access need additional room. The 28-gallon version without the B suffix is not included in this guide collection.

Ruud Professional Achiever Atmospheric gas models

Compare eight standard tall 40- and 50-gallon models: five natural gas and three propane configurations. These use top water connections and a side temperature-and-pressure relief valve. Burner input, first-hour output and dimensions vary even among heaters with the same nominal capacity.

Model guide Capacity and fuel Input First-hour rating
PROG40-36N RU62 40-gallon tall natural gas 36,000 BTU/h 64 gallons
PROG40-38N RU62 40-gallon tall natural gas 38,000 BTU/h 64 gallons
PROG40-40N RU62 40-gallon tall natural gas 40,000 BTU/h 84 gallons
PROG40-36P RU62 40-gallon tall propane 36,000 BTU/h 84 gallons
PROG40-32P RU62 40-gallon tall propane 32,000 BTU/h 67 gallons
PROG50-40N RU62 50-gallon tall natural gas 40,000 BTU/h 76 gallons
PROG50-36P RU62 50-gallon tall propane 36,000 BTU/h 76 gallons
PROG50-38N RU60 50-gallon tall natural gas 38,000 BTU/h 85 gallons

The 40-gallon models have 38 gallons of rated storage; the 50-gallon models have 48. A larger nominal tank does not always have a higher first-hour rating. Each guide uses the exact row in Ruud’s October 2025 specification sheet and distinguishes tank height from height to the vent. The older family web table’s Energy Factor values are not the sheet’s UEF values.

For gas replacements, WHE checks the correct factory fuel, gas supply, draft hood, complete vent route, combustion air and relief-discharge arrangement. See our gas water heater installation service for planning. This selection covers the standard models; TT top-relief-valve and AX side-water-connection versions are separate configurations.

What WHE checks before replacement

  • Demand: back-to-back showers, large tubs, simultaneous appliances and recovery time.
  • Access and fit: doorway width, overhead plumbing, tank diameter, pan, support and service access.
  • Electrical supply: the exact unit’s nameplate, wiring diagram and available circuit. The sheet’s standard configuration is 240V with dual 4,500W non-simultaneous elements.
  • Water piping: connections, pressure, thermal expansion and temperature-and-pressure relief discharge.
  • Location: whether the existing space is suitable or an attic-to-garage relocation should be considered.

See our electric water heater installation service for project planning, or browse the full water heater catalog. A gallon label alone is not a reliable household-size recommendation.

Model numbers, ratings and warranty

Ruud’s official Standard Electric family page links the May 2024 PROE RU N Rev. 16 specification sheet. Our model guides use that sheet’s UEF ratings rather than the webpage’s older Energy Factor column. The linked sheet identifies the 55-gallon model as PROE55 T2 RU94, despite RU95 appearing in the older web table. Rated storage, first-hour delivery and UEF are unlisted for the 19.9-gallon model.

The base warranty is six-year limited tank and parts coverage for eligible single-family use, subject to the supplied certificate. Labor and reinstallation are excluded by the linked terms; other installation types have different coverage. ProtectionPlus is a separate extension. Read our Ruud water heater warranty guide for model comparisons, hot water heater registration guidance and details about tank extensions and labor costs. The representative manufacturer photograph shows a tall tank; medium and short proportions and supplied blankets differ.

Ruud installation questions

Which Ruud size should I choose?

We compare peak hot-water use with rated storage and first-hour delivery, then check the installation space. Larger nominal capacity does not always mean a taller or wider finished installation.

Are the medium models the same as short lowboys?

No. Ruud classifies them separately. Medium bodies in this group are 37½–48¼ inches high; short bodies are around 30–32 inches before any required blanket. Check the individual guide’s connection height as well.

Does the 28-gallon blanket model fit a 19¾-inch opening?

That is its bare diameter. The required blanket adds five inches to the diameter, making the calculated insulated body about 24¾ inches wide before pan and service space.

Do the two 4,500W elements use 9,000W together?

Ruud’s standard wiring is non-simultaneous: one element operates at a time. Special-order configurations must be checked separately against the unit’s nameplate.

How can I get an installation estimate?

Call 561-602-9062 or use the estimate link. Send the model label, full installation and surrounding-space photos, and tell us when you run short of hot water.
