Ruud Water Heater Warranty & Protection Plus

A Ruud water heater warranty can help with a covered tank or component failure, but the model and warranty certificate determine the protection you receive. Tank coverage, parts coverage and installation labor are separate questions.

This guide explains professional Ruud hot water heater warranties, ProtectionPlus extensions, registration and the information to gather before requesting service. For local replacement options, visit our Ruud water heater installation page.

How long is a Ruud water heater warranty?

Selected professional electric models carry 6-, 8- or 12-year limited tank and parts coverage. The examples below show why you should compare the exact product family rather than assume every Ruud water heater has the same warranty.

Selected Ruud professional electric warranty examples
Product family Limited tank warranty Limited parts warranty
Professional Achiever Standard Electric 6 years 6 years
Professional Achiever Plus with LeakSense and Demand Response 8 years 8 years
Professional Ultra with LeakGuard 12 years 12 years

These are specific product examples, subject to their certificates and eligible installation conditions. They are not a warranty chart for every model bearing the Achiever, Achiever Plus or Ultra name. Gas, tankless, heat pump and commercial hot water heaters require their own documentation.

When comparing quotes, ask the installer to list the complete model number, the tank and parts periods, and any separate labor coverage. That makes a longer warranty easier to evaluate alongside installation quality, capacity and service needs.

What does the Ruud water heater warranty cover?

The 6-year residential certificate linked by Ruud covers eligible defects in materials or workmanship, subject to its conditions. Improper installation or maintenance can affect coverage.

A covered hot water heater replacement does not automatically mean a free installation. That certificate excludes labor, removal, disposal, reinstallation and permits. Ask for a written breakdown of covered equipment and your remaining charges before authorizing work.

For your particular unit, have the contractor distinguish a tank problem from a replaceable component failure. An estimate should explain the diagnosis, the proposed repair or replacement, and what needs manufacturer approval.

ProtectionPlus: extend an eligible Ruud tank warranty

Ruud’s water heating FAQs describe a ProtectionPlus kit that adds four years of tank leak coverage to eligible residential gas and electric models. The kit is added during installation of a new water heater.

ProtectionPlus tank extensions advertised for the selected families
Eligible product example Original limited tank term Tank term with eligible ProtectionPlus kit
Professional Achiever Standard Electric 6 years 10 years
Professional Achiever Plus with LeakSense and Demand Response 8 years 12 years

The extra years protect the tank; they do not automatically extend the parts warranty or pay installation labor. Rheem’s ProtectionPlus water-heating terms expressly distinguish the tank extension from parts and labor coverage. For a Ruud hot water heater, confirm the compatible kit and written extension terms with the installer.

Discuss the upgrade while choosing your new equipment. Ask that the quote identify the kit, installation and documentation needed to record the extension. Keep the certificate with your invoice. Do not assume a kit can be added years later, or that a 12-year model automatically qualifies for four more years.

For a new Ruud water heater, compare the price of the extension with a model that already has a longer factory warranty. A longer tank term and a longer parts term can offer different value.

Register your Ruud hot water heater and keep the invoice

After installation, use Ruud’s warranty and product registration center and choose Water Heating Products. Keep your confirmation with the installation invoice, purchase receipt, model number, serial number and any ProtectionPlus paperwork.

Registration and proof of the warranty start date are separate issues. The linked residential certificate says proof of the original purchase date may be required. Keep both purchase and installation records; do not assume registration alone changes the start date.

If the warranty lookup does not match your records, ask Ruud to review the documents and confirm the applicable dates. The manufacturing date can help identify a unit’s age, but it is not enough by itself to resolve every coverage question. Our water heater age guide can help you locate and understand the serial number.

For a hot water heater installed as a warranty replacement, retain the original unit’s records as well as the replacement paperwork. Keep photos of both rating labels when available.

How to request Ruud warranty service

  1. Photograph the rating label. Capture the complete model and serial numbers clearly.
  2. Gather your records. Find the purchase and installation invoices, registration confirmation and extension certificate, if applicable.
  3. Describe the problem. Explain whether you have no hot water, an error message or visible leaking. Include a photo of the whole unit and the affected area.
  4. Confirm the next step and costs. Ask the contractor to verify eligibility and explain any diagnostic, labor, permit or installation charges.

Ruud’s tank product support page lists 800-621-5622 for customer service, warranty and parts. You can also contact the original installer for assistance.

Ruud warranty questions

Does a replacement hot water heater start a new warranty?

The linked 6-year certificate gives a standard replacement the remaining original term. Certain paid upgrades can qualify for a new warranty.

Does the warranty transfer when I buy a home?

Coverage under the linked residential certificate is nontransferable and limited to the original owner. Check your unit’s terms.

Is a condo or rental water heater covered for the same number of years?

The linked 6-year certificate reduces coverage to one year outside a single-family dwelling. Ask Ruud how your property is classified.

Should I replace a hot water heater when the warranty ends?

Warranty expiration alone does not tell you the unit’s condition. Have its age, performance and installation evaluated, and check any insurer or association replacement requirement separately.
