Is the A.O. Smith FPTU-50 130 right for your home?
The A.O. Smith ProLine XE Voltex FPTU-50 130 is a hybrid electric heat-pump water heater with a 50-gallon nominal tank. It uses heat from surrounding air to heat water, with electric resistance elements available when hot-water demand or operating conditions call for them. At Water Heating Experts, we compare the hot-water needs, electrical supply, space and drain arrangements before recommending a unit in Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter or nearby communities.
This model lists 46 gallons rated storage, a 66-gallon first-hour rating and a 3.35 Uniform Energy Factor (UEF). First-hour rating measures hot-water delivery under a standardized test, not the water physically in the tank. The energy-efficiency rating describes tested performance rather than guaranteed savings on your particular electric bill.
Why choose a 50-gallon hybrid water heater?
The 50-gallon Voltex is the narrowest model in this 6-year Voltex family at 22 inches in diameter, but it is still 63 inches high. Compared with the FPTU-66 130 (61 inches tall and 26½ inches across) or FPTU-80 130 (69 inches tall and 26½ inches across), this model may fit a tighter floor plan. Whether 46 gallons of storage and the 66-gallon first-hour rating are enough depends on household demand.
Installation, air space and condensate drainage
A heat-pump water heater is different from a conventional electric tank. Its compressor takes heat from surrounding air, cools and dehumidifies that air, and creates condensate that must drain safely. A garage may be practical, but the installation must have sufficient air volume, access to the removable filter, an approved drain or condensate pump, and suitable service clearances. The manufacturer requires at least six inches from all sides and above for access, with more clearance recommended for service. Tight closets need special consideration for air exchange; we do not assume the heater will operate efficiently in an unventilated enclosure.
Water connections are ¾-inch side connections, not top connections like many electric storage tanks. The model uses a 208/240-volt single-phase electrical supply with a 30-amp breaker, according to A.O. Smith’s installation documentation. It includes electric backup heating elements with a maximum listed input of 4,500 watts. WHE checks the exact unit, electrical circuit, piping, drain routing and available installation access before quoting.
Operation, maintenance and warranty
Its electronic controls offer Efficiency, Hybrid, Electric and Vacation modes. The washable air filter needs routine attention, and the condensate drain must stay clear. Tank protection includes Blue Diamond glass lining and a CoreGard anode rod. The heater is ENERGY STAR certified and carries a six-year limited tank and parts warranty, subject to written terms; labor costs are separate. We confirm any applicable incentives directly rather than promising rebates or energy savings.
FPTU-50 130 frequently asked questions
Is this a regular electric water heater?
No. It is a hybrid heat-pump water heater that transfers heat from surrounding air and can also use electric resistance elements when needed. It is not the same as a standard electric tank or the grid-capable EETU series.
Does it really store 50 gallons?
The nominal size is 50 gallons and A.O. Smith lists 46 gallons of rated storage. The 66-gallon first-hour figure measures delivery in a standard test, not tank volume.
Can WHE install it in a garage?
A garage can be a useful location if the installation provides air volume, clearances, condensate drainage, suitable wiring and protection from damage. We review site conditions before recommending it.
Will a hybrid water heater need a drain?
Yes. Heat-pump operation produces condensate, so a suitable drain or a condensate pump is required. The temperature-and-pressure relief valve needs its own compliant discharge arrangement.
Are electricity savings or rebates guaranteed?
No. Actual operating costs depend on conditions, usage and rates. Rebate eligibility depends on current program rules and equipment qualification and must be confirmed separately.
