Is the Rheem PROE30 M2 RH95 right for your replacement?
The Rheem PROE30 M2 RH95 is the 30-gallon nominal medium-height electric model in the Professional Classic series. It is worth comparing when a tall heater will not fit comfortably below existing piping or shelving. WHE checks the usable installation space and your busiest hot-water period before recommending a smaller electric tank.
The M2 version is a distinct configuration from the PROE30 T2 RH95 tall model and Rheem’s short models. Keep the full model number with your measurements so a similar gallon label does not lead to the wrong tank shape.
Capacity, efficiency and recovery
Rheem’s May 2024 specification sheet lists 30 gallons nominal capacity, 27 gallons rated storage, 0.90 UEF and a 45-gallon first-hour rating. Standard recovery is approximately 21 gallons per hour at a 90°F temperature rise. First-hour rating combines storage and recovery during a standardized test; it does not mean the tank holds 45 gallons.
For a household with closely spaced showers or a large bathtub, the modest storage volume matters even if the tank fits perfectly. WHE asks about fixture use and when hot water runs short. That helps determine whether the medium 30 is appropriate or whether a larger tank deserves comparison.
Dimensions and practical installation space
The tank is 37½ inches high and 20¼ inches in diameter, with the water connections reaching 40½ inches. Rheem lists ¾-inch NPT water connections and an approximate shipping weight of 92 pounds. The connection height, not just the top of the tank, matters beneath a cabinet or shelf.
WHE checks the access opening, completed piping, a drain pan where required, relief discharge and space to service the elements and anode. A lower tank can make a replacement easier to arrange, but cramped controls or blocked service access can still make the location unsuitable. We also review shutoffs, water pressure and thermal expansion.
Electrical requirements and venting
The standard specification is 240V AC, single phase, with 4,500-watt upper and lower elements operating non-simultaneously. The two elements do not create a 9,000-watt simultaneous load in that standard configuration. Rheem permits specifically ordered wattage and wiring variations, so WHE verifies the supplied unit’s nameplate, dedicated circuit, disconnect and grounding.
This is an indoor electric resistance storage heater. It needs no gas supply or combustion exhaust vent. Proper electrical service, plumbing, drainage and access are still necessary. It also differs from a hybrid heat pump, which needs an air path and condensate disposal.
Comparing the medium 30 with other Rheem models
The PROE30 T2 RH95 tall model has the same 27 gallons rated storage. Its tank is 47½ inches high and 19 inches in diameter: 10 inches taller and 1¼ inches narrower. It lists 0.92 UEF and a 44-gallon first-hour rating, compared with this medium model’s 0.90 and 45 gallons. That one-gallon test difference should not outweigh fit and household demand.
The PROE40 M2 RH95 medium increases rated storage to 36 gallons and first-hour delivery to 55 gallons. It has the same 20¼-inch diameter but a 48¼-inch tank height. Moving up therefore adds 10¾ inches in tank height while retaining the listed diameter.
The existing PROE50 M2 RH95 guide covers a larger medium tank with 45 gallons rated storage and a 62-gallon first-hour rating. Its 23-inch diameter requires more width. All three medium models list approximately 21 GPH recovery with the standard element configuration, so greater storage is not the same as more heating wattage.
Maintenance and limited warranty
The series includes a protective tank lining, anode rod, resistored heating elements, sediment-reduction diffuser and brass drain valve. Those features do not remove the need for maintenance. WHE considers local water conditions and access when discussing sediment and anode care.
Rheem lists a six-year limited tank-and-parts warranty, subject to the applicable certificate. Optional ProtectionPlus tank coverage is not automatically included, and the manufacturer’s tank-and-parts term should not be read as six years of installation labor. WHE confirms availability, pricing and any installation coverage with the estimate.

PROE30 M2 RH95 frequently asked questions
How tall is the Rheem PROE30 M2 RH95?
The tank is 37½ inches tall and 20¼ inches in diameter. Water connections reach 40½ inches. Fittings, drainage and access for service require additional space.
Does it have 30 gallons of rated storage?
Rheem lists 30 gallons nominal capacity and 27 gallons rated storage. Its 45-gallon first-hour rating is a separate standardized measure of delivery.
How does it differ from the 30-gallon tall model?
The medium tank is 10 inches shorter and 1¼ inches wider than PROE30 T2 RH95. Both have 27 gallons rated storage; the medium lists 0.90 UEF and 45-gallon first-hour delivery, versus 0.92 UEF and 44 gallons for the tall.
Do its two elements create a 9,000-watt operating load?
The standard configuration has upper and lower 4,500-watt elements wired for non-simultaneous operation. Only one operates at a time in that arrangement. WHE verifies the actual nameplate and circuit before installation.
Can a 30-gallon medium replace my 40- or 50-gallon heater?
Only if the smaller heater can meet your peak demand and the installation is compatible. WHE checks overlapping showers, bathtub use and other loads before recommending reduced storage.
