Water Heater Warranty Guide: Coverage & Registration

A water heater warranty may help pay for an eligible tank or component failure, but coverage depends on the exact model, installation and written terms. Before arranging service, find out which equipment is covered, when coverage ends and whether labor is included.

Use this hot water heater warranty guide to find your brand, understand common coverage questions and gather the records needed for a claim. Water Heating Experts also helps Palm Beach County homeowners evaluate repair and replacement options.

Find your brand’s warranty guide

Start with the name on the rating label. Each guide below explains selected models, official lookup resources and the details to check for your particular unit.

Water heater warranty guides by manufacturer
Brand guide What the guide covers
Rheem Professional models, ProtectionPlus, registration and Home Depot model differences.
A.O. Smith ProLine models, selected extended options, registration and Lowe’s model differences.
American Water Heaters Professional models, coverage periods, registration and preparing for service.
Bradford White Factory coverage, BUILTBEST upgrades, registration and claim assistance.
Ruud Professional models, ProtectionPlus, registration records and labor costs.

For a hot water heater with a different brand or product type, check its own certificate and manufacturer support resources. Coverage for one model should not be applied to another simply because the equipment looks similar.

Tank, parts and labor: three separate questions

When comparing a water heater warranty, ask for each coverage period in writing. A large number on the brochure may describe the tank term without promising the same protection for everything else.

  • Tank coverage: Check which tank failures qualify, the coverage period and the exclusions. For a tankless unit, look for the separate heat-exchanger terms.
  • Parts coverage: Confirm which components are eligible and whether their coverage ends at the same time as the tank or heat exchanger.
  • Labor and installation: Ask who pays for diagnosis, repair labor, removal, disposal, permits and reinstallation. Keep any installer labor warranty with the manufacturer’s paperwork.

A covered hot water heater does not automatically mean a no-cost service visit or replacement installation. Request an itemized estimate showing manufacturer-covered equipment and any charges you would pay.

How to check a hot water heater warranty

  1. Photograph the rating label. Include the complete model and serial numbers, not just the brand name.
  2. Find the paperwork. Gather the purchase receipt, installation invoice, registration confirmation and extension certificate, if applicable.
  3. Use the manufacturer’s lookup. Follow the official links in the brand guide above. Match the result to the label on your equipment.
  4. Confirm the details. If dates or coverage are unclear, ask manufacturer support to review your records before relying on a claim.

For example, A.O. Smith’s verification page accepts a serial or reference number, while the Bradford White Warranty Center provides separate warranty-check and registration options. A lookup result is a starting point; the failure still needs to meet the applicable terms.

If you need help identifying the manufacture date, use our water heater age guide. Age, remaining coverage and equipment condition answer different questions.

Register promptly and keep proof of the start date

After installation, complete the applicable registration steps and save the confirmation. If your installer registers the unit, ask for a copy. Keep the dated invoice even after online registration is complete.

There is no single start-date rule for every hot water heater warranty. The certificate may use purchase or installation records and specify a manufacturing-date fallback when documentation is unavailable. Registration alone should not be treated as a guarantee that coverage restarts on the installation date.

When checking a water heater warranty, compare the recorded dates with your invoice and ask the manufacturer to resolve any discrepancy. Also confirm whether an extension has its own registration deadline.

Is an extended warranty worth considering?

Compare what the upgrade adds, its price and its eligibility requirements. A longer hot water heater warranty can mean additional tank coverage, additional parts coverage or a separate service agreement; these are different benefits.

  • Rheem and Ruud ProtectionPlus: See the brand guides for eligible model examples. The manufacturer’s ProtectionPlus water-heating terms describe a four-year tank extension that does not include parts or labor.
  • Bradford White BUILTBEST: The manufacturer’s warranty center describes eligible upgrades involving tank and component coverage. Confirm the exact option and registration requirements for your model.
  • Other offers: Ask whether the agreement comes from the manufacturer, installer or another provider, and read its coverage and claim process before purchasing.

Discuss extension options while choosing your equipment. Ask the installer to identify any required kit, enrollment deadline and paperwork on the quote.

Preparing for warranty service or replacement

For a water heater problem, contact the original installer or an appropriate service professional. Describe the symptoms, provide label photos and ask how manufacturer approval will be handled. Keep the original equipment and paperwork available until the contractor confirms any return requirements.

Before authorizing a hot water heater replacement, ask these questions:

  • What failed, and is repair practical?
  • Which equipment or parts are approved for warranty coverage?
  • What will I pay for labor, materials, permits or other work?
  • What warranty term applies to the replacement equipment?

A water heater warranty period is not a prediction of equipment life. For condition and replacement planning, read how long a unit typically lasts. If you received an insurer or association notice, review that requirement separately with our insurance and condo replacement guide.

Hot water heater warranty questions

Does every model from the same brand have the same warranty?

No. Compare the exact model, fuel type, installation use and certificate. Tank, tankless, heat pump and commercial equipment can have different coverage.

Does a warranty transfer when I buy a home?

Transfer rules vary. Check the original certificate and ask the manufacturer whether ownership or installation-location restrictions apply before relying on remaining coverage.

Will a replacement hot water heater get a new full warranty?

Do not assume so. Some replacement terms use the remaining original period, while specific paid upgrades may have different provisions. Ask for the applicable replacement terms in writing.

What if the online lookup does not match my invoice?

Contact manufacturer support with the model, serial number and dated records. Ask them to confirm the correct coverage and explain any difference before arranging warranty work.
