Rheem Water Heater Warranty & Protection Plus
A Rheem water heater warranty can help with a covered tank failure or defective part, but tank, parts, and labor coverage can end at different times. For a Rheem Professional hot water heater, start with the exact model and its warranty certificate, then check whether an eligible Protection Plus extension was included with installation.
Water Heating Experts provides Rheem warranty service in Palm Beach County, Florida. We start with Rheem’s Professional models, then explain registration, Protection Plus, and Home Depot coverage. For local equipment and installation options, visit our Rheem installation and replacement page.
What does a Rheem water heater warranty cover?
Read the warranty certificate for your exact model and look for three separate categories:
- Tank coverage: The remedy for a covered tank failure, such as an eligible leaking tank.
- Parts coverage: Replacement of eligible components that fail because of a covered defect.
- Labor coverage: Qualifying service work during the stated labor period, subject to Rheem’s terms and approval.
A hot water heater with several years of tank coverage remaining can still have out-of-pocket service costs. A warranty also does not mean every leak or loss of hot water qualifies: the source of the problem and the applicable exclusions matter.
Rheem Professional hot water heater warranties
Rheem’s Professional range includes Classic, Classic Plus, and Prestige models. These selected electric storage examples show how limited tank and parts coverage differs. Labor coverage must be checked separately in the applicable certificate and any installation agreement.
| Professional model example | Limited tank coverage | Limited parts coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Professional Classic standard electric — PROE40 T2 RH95 | 6 years | 6 years |
| Professional Classic Plus with LeakSense and Demand Response — PRO+E50 M2 RH CG | 8 years | 8 years |
| Professional Prestige with LeakGuard and Demand Response — PROPE50 M2 RH CG | 12 years | 12 years |
These examples are for selected Professional electric models. Gas, hybrid, tankless, and other Rheem water heater models can have different terms. Confirm the full model number, property use, and applicable certificate before relying on a warranty length.
When choosing a Professional hot water heater, compare the exact model’s tank and parts terms, compatible extension options, and installation needs. For a broader product comparison, see Rheem models from Home Depot versus a plumbing contractor.
How to check your Rheem hot water heater warranty
Start with Rheem’s official warranty verification page. Have the complete serial number ready, and locate the model number and original purchase documents. Keep these together:
- A clear photo of the rating label.
- The purchase receipt and installation invoice.
- The original warranty certificate and any extension paperwork.
- A description of the problem and photos of visible leakage or damage.
If you are unsure how old the equipment is, our water heater age guide can help identify its manufacturing age. Age alone does not establish coverage. The purchase date, warranty terms, ownership, and claim details still need verification.
Register your water heater and save the installation invoice
Register your new Rheem hot water heater promptly through Rheem’s registration page, and keep your purchase receipt, dated installation invoice, and registration confirmation. These records help establish when the unit was purchased or installed, especially if it was manufactured months earlier.
The start date depends on the model’s warranty certificate. Keep the documentation needed to establish the applicable purchase or installation date. Some other Rheem warranties, including this tankless warranty example, use a documented installation date.
Registration alone does not guarantee that the warranty start date changes. Keep the supporting invoices even after registering. If the online lookup shows an earlier date than your purchase or installation, contact Rheem with those documents to confirm the applicable start date.
Rheem Protection Plus: extending an eligible water heater warranty
Rheem Protection Plus offers a four-year limited tank warranty extension for eligible models. With the correct kit, the Professional Classic example above can go from six to ten years of tank coverage, and the Professional Classic Plus example can go from eight to twelve. Ask about this when choosing your new hot water heater.
The water-heating extension does not extend parts or labor coverage. Rheem says it must be added at purchase and installation because upgraded internal components must be installed. The extension begins when the original tank warranty ends and is not transferable.
Before ordering Protection Plus for a water heater, confirm the exact model, compatible kit, extension length, and certificate with WHE or Rheem. Eligibility is model-specific. Rheem’s page also discusses HVAC protection plans; their parts-and-labor benefits should not be applied to this tank warranty extension.
Home Depot Rheem hot water heater warranties: 6, 9, and 12 years
If you purchased a Rheem unit from Home Depot, use the retail model’s own warranty certificate. The following gas storage examples illustrate the different tank, parts, and in-home labor periods:
| Retail product line and example | Limited tank coverage | Limited parts coverage | In-home labor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Performance — XG40T06EC36U1 | 6 years | 6 years | 1 year |
| Performance Plus — XG40T09HE40U0 | 9 years | 9 years | 2 years |
| Performance Platinum — XG50T12HE40U0 | 12 years | 12 years | 3 years |
These examples do not cover every Home Depot water heater. Check the exact model and property use; the example certificates distinguish single-family installations from other applications. A manufacturer’s warranty also has a different process from a store return.
The linked six-year, nine-year, and 12-year warranty certificates use the documented original purchase date. Without that proof, they use the manufacture date plus 30 days. Keep your receipt and confirm claim instructions before taking equipment back to a store.
Is Home Depot’s protection plan the same as Protection Plus?
No. A separately purchased Home Depot Protection Plan is a different agreement. Its hot water heater benefits, term, and claim process depend on the plan you bought.
The currently linked plan terms describe eligible repair labor and reinstallation labor when a covered replacement is required. They exclude tankless units and Hotpoint products. Check the terms corresponding to your purchase date and receipt, and obtain the plan administrator’s instructions before authorizing work. A separate service plan does not replace the manufacturer’s warranty.
What to do before a Rheem water heater warranty replacement
- Document the problem. Record when it started and photograph the label and affected area without opening electrical or gas components.
- Verify coverage and the claim route. Contact Rheem or your installer with the model, serial number, and purchase information. Follow any separate plan’s authorization process.
- Preserve the equipment. Do not discard the failed hot water heater, defective parts, or rating label before receiving instructions. Rheem may require inspection or return.
- Ask for an itemized estimate. Confirm which items are covered and which charges you will pay before approving work.
- Keep the replacement records. Save the claim number, invoice, new serial number, and warranty documents.
Once the applicable labor period ends, you may be responsible for service labor, removal, disposal, reinstallation, permits, and some transportation costs. The example 12-year Rheem certificate explains these limits. A covered replacement tank does not automatically mean a complete installation at no charge.
Improper installation, certain maintenance-related failures, and other excluded causes can also affect a water heater claim. A diagnosis helps distinguish a covered equipment defect from a problem elsewhere in the plumbing or installation.

Rheem warranty questions
Does a 12-year hot water heater warranty include 12 years of labor?
Do not assume that it does. Tank, parts, and labor have separate terms, including on Professional models. The Home Depot Performance Platinum example lists 12 years of limited tank and parts coverage with three years of in-home labor. Check the exact certificate for your equipment.
Does a replacement water heater get a brand-new warranty?
A standard warranty replacement normally carries the remaining original term. The example nine-year certificate provides a new full term for specified paid upgrades or required-feature price differences. Confirm the terms shown on your replacement paperwork.
Can I add Protection Plus to an older hot water heater?
Rheem’s water-heating FAQ says the extension must be added at purchase and installation. It is not presented as a way to renew an aging unit’s expired coverage.
Does a Rheem water heater warranty transfer when I buy a home?
The example six-year warranty and the other residential certificates discussed here limit coverage to the original owner; they are not transferable. Review the exact certificate for the installed unit before relying on a previous owner’s remaining warranty years.
Warranty information reviewed October 21, 2026, using Rheem’s official product and warranty resources and the linked retail warranty and protection-plan documents. Your model’s certificate and any purchased plan govern coverage.
