Rheem Water Heater Age by Serial Number

To find your Rheem water heater age, check the rating label for a printed manufacture date first. If there is no readable date, identify the serial-number format before decoding it. Rheem has used more than one format, so the first two numbers do not always mean the month.

This guide uses a real Rheem hot water heater label from WHE’s photo library, plus Rheem’s own serial-number references. For other brands and our label-reading tool, visit the Water Heater Age guide.

Where to Find the Rheem Model and Serial Number

Look for the exterior rating label marked Model No. and Serial No. Photograph the entire label, including any field marked MFG. DATE. A separate specification sticker may also show a manufacturing month and year, as it does in our example below.

Keep the model and serial number together. The model identifies the equipment; the serial number identifies the individual unit. A handwritten service sticker, an EnergyGuide dollar estimate or the date on a maintenance receipt is not a substitute for the manufacturer’s date.

Rheem Water Heater Age by Serial Number: Two Documented Formats

Label formatExampleManufacture date
Month, year, plant and sequence12 09 D 01234December 2009
Plant, week, year and sequenceQ 45 20 …Week 45 of 2020; check the printed date too

In the month/year example, 12 is December and 09 is 2009. Rheem illustrates this format in its official serial-number guide. Use it only when your label matches that arrangement.

Rheem’s technical bulletin 1207 (PDF, page 2) also documents plant letter + two-digit week + two-digit year + production sequence. The bulletin describes plant-by-plant transitions beginning in 2012. There is no single changeover date to apply blindly to every Rheem hot water heater.

The distinction matters: 45 can be a manufacturing week, but it cannot be a month. If the characters do not fit the documented pattern, stop and confirm the complete label with Rheem instead of forcing a result.

Real Rheem Label: Manufactured November 2, 2020

An actual Rheem label from WHE’s photo library. The rating plate states MFG. DATE: 02NOV2020; the upper sticker shows 11/2020. Select the photo to enlarge.

The photographed hot water heater is model PRO+G75-76N RU. Its main label prints 02NOV2020, meaning November 2, 2020. The upper sticker independently shows 11/2020. You can read the manufacture date directly without estimating from the appearance of the tank.

Its serial number begins Q4520: Q is the plant code, 45 is the manufacturing week and 20 is the year. That agrees with the printed November 2020 date. The printed date is the clearest answer for this particular water heater.

Professional, Performance, Tankless and Older Rheem Labels

A product-family name or where a hot water heater was purchased does not establish its age. Whether you have a Professional model or a Performance model purchased at Home Depot, start with the actual rating label. Use our Rheem installation page for equipment and replacement information.

For an older, tankless, hybrid or unfamiliar label that does not match these examples, ask Rheem to confirm the date using the complete model and serial number. Include every letter and any suffix. Do not borrow a decoding rule from another brand: our A.O. Smith age guide, for example, explains a different year/week order.

Manufacture Date, Installation Date and Warranty Are Different

The manufacture date tells you when the equipment was made. Your installation invoice documents when it was installed. Keep both records rather than assuming those dates are identical. When asking about coverage, supply the full label photo, installation paperwork and any registration or extension documentation.

Dating a hot water heater does not establish whether a repair is covered. Check the applicable terms through Rheem’s warranty resources and our Rheem water heater warranty guide, which explains Professional models, Protection Plus and retail models.

If an insurer or HOA has requested replacement, use its written request to clarify which date and documents it needs. Our insurance and water heater replacement article explains what to discuss before arranging the work.

Rheem Water Heater Age Questions

Do the first two numbers always tell me the month?

No. Match the whole serial-number format. Some Rheem examples begin with month and year; the plant-letter format discussed above uses week and year. A printed manufacture date can resolve the question directly.

Can I find my Rheem hot water heater age from the model number alone?

Use the serial number and any printed manufacture date to date the individual unit. Keep the model number as well so Rheem can identify the correct equipment and interpret an unfamiliar label.

Does the manufacture date tell me when replacement is due?

It gives you a starting point for planning. A replacement decision also needs the equipment’s condition, service history, household demand and any specific replacement deadline you have received. Age alone is not a condition assessment.
