Is this 50-gallon Rheem right for your home?
WHE’s take: start with your hot-water demand and available space, then compare equipment. This medium-height electric tank may be worth considering where height is limited, but its wider footprint still needs checking. Another heater marked “50 gallon” is not automatically the same size or a direct replacement.
Tell us when hot water runs short: during consecutive showers, bathtub fills, or overlapping appliance use. Those details are more useful than bedroom count alone. We can compare this model with other electric water heater options before you decide.
What the hot-water ratings mean
Rheem lists a 62-gallon first-hour rating for PROE50 M2 RH95. This standardized test helps compare performance; it is not a promise of 62 gallons available at any moment. Water temperatures, settings and usage affect actual delivery.
The listed recovery rate is 21 gallons per hour at a 90°F temperature rise. The standard configuration is 240-volt, single-phase, with two 4,500-watt elements wired for non-simultaneous operation. It should not be described as a 9,000-watt operating load. WHE checks the delivered unit’s nameplate, dedicated branch circuit, disconnect and grounding because specifically ordered electrical variations are possible. This indoor electric resistance tank uses ¾-inch NPT water connections and requires no gas supply or combustion exhaust flue.
Dimensions and model comparisons
The PROE50 M2 RH95 tank measures 48 inches high and 23 inches in diameter, with water connections at 50½ inches. Those dimensions do not include the space needed for fittings, a drain pan where required, relief discharge or service. Rheem lists 0.93 UEF, 50 gallons nominal capacity and 45 gallons rated storage for this exact model.
The PROE40 T2 RH95 40-gallon tall has 36 gallons rated storage and a 55-gallon first-hour rating. This 50-gallon medium adds 9 gallons of rated storage and 7 gallons in the first-hour test. It is 12¾ inches shorter at the tank but 3¾ inches wider, so more capacity does not necessarily require more height.
The PROE55 T2 RH94 55-gallon tall provides 55 gallons rated storage and a 72-gallon first-hour rating. Its tank is 9 inches taller and ¾ inch narrower than this 50-gallon medium. Both list approximately 21 GPH recovery at a 90°F rise with the standard elements. The 55 offers more stored hot water, rather than faster recovery from a higher-powered heating system.
What WHE checks before replacement
Send photos of the heater, readable model label, visible connections and surrounding space. We review removal access, tank fit, service access, electrical compatibility, water connections and drainage. We also discuss the location and any changes included in your estimate.
A lower tank can help with height constraints, but piping and working space above it still matter. We assess the complete installation. Learn about our installation and replacement service.
Warranty and upkeep
Rheem lists a six-year limited tank-and-parts warranty for qualifying single-family installations, subject to its terms. The certificate excludes service and installation labor and specifies shorter coverage for other settings. An optional ProtectionPlus tank extension is not automatically included. Any WHE labor coverage should be stated separately in your estimate. We can discuss maintenance appropriate to your equipment and water conditions.
Rheem 50-gallon questions
Why does this 50-gallon model list 45 gallons of storage?
Rheem identifies it as a 50-gallon nominal model and lists 45 gallons of rated capacity. Keep the exact model number with the specifications when comparing heaters.
Is the medium model the same as the tall version?
No. PROE50 M2 RH95 and PROE50 T2 RH95 are different configurations. Check the complete model number and dimensions before ordering.
Should I replace a 40-gallon heater with this one?
Possibly, but extra capacity alone does not establish a good fit. We review demand, dimensions and installation requirements. You can also compare the Rheem 40-gallon model.
What determines the installed price?
Equipment, access, connections and necessary work affect the estimate. Request a quote for your property; this page does not promise a fixed installed price.
Can I request this model through WHE?
Yes. Tell us the model you are considering. We check suitability and supplier availability before confirming equipment. An estimate request starts that review.
