Is the Rheem PROE40 T2 RH95 right for your replacement?

The Rheem PROE40 T2 RH95 pairs a relatively narrow tank with a tall profile. It can be a useful starting point for a conventional electric replacement where floor space is limited, but height is available. WHE checks the complete installation space and the times when your household needs the most hot water before recommending it.

Capacity and hot-water delivery

Rheem’s May 2024 specification sheet lists 40 gallons nominal capacity, 36 gallons rated storage, a 55-gallon first-hour rating and 0.93 Uniform Energy Factor (UEF). Standard recovery is approximately 21 gallons per hour at a 90°F temperature rise. First-hour rating combines stored hot water and recovery under test conditions; it is not a promise of that volume at every temperature or flow rate.

Dimensions and installation space

The tank is 60¾ inches high and 19¼ inches in diameter. Water connections reach 63⅝ inches, so measuring only the tank shell can miss a conflict with overhead shelving or piping. These are equipment dimensions, not the total installation envelope.

WHE checks the access opening, room for fittings and a drain pan where required, relief-valve discharge, and access to the heating elements and anode. A narrow tank still needs a workable service area. We also review shutoffs, pressure, thermal expansion and the route for removing the old equipment.

Electrical requirements and installation checks

Rheem’s standard configuration uses 240V AC, single-phase power with 4,500-watt upper and lower elements operating non-simultaneously. Only one element operates at a time in that standard arrangement. The manufacturer also allows specifically ordered electrical variations, so WHE verifies the delivered unit’s nameplate and the existing dedicated branch circuit, disconnect and grounding.

This is an indoor electric resistance tank. It requires no gas connection or combustion exhaust vent. The specification sheet lists ¾-inch NPT water connections. WHE reviews the water piping, relief-valve discharge, drainage, pressure and thermal expansion requirements as part of the replacement; electrical and plumbing compatibility are not assumed from the gallon label.

How it compares with other Rheem models

The PROE40 M2 RH95 medium model has the same 36-gallon rated storage, 55-gallon first-hour rating and 0.93 UEF. Its tank is 48¼ inches high and 20¼ inches in diameter: 12½ inches shorter and 1 inch wider than this tall model. That is a useful comparison when a shelf or low ceiling limits height.

The 30-gallon tall PROE30 T2 RH95 is shorter and slightly narrower, but reduces rated storage to 27 gallons and first-hour delivery to 44 gallons. If more hot water is the goal, the 50-gallon medium PROE50 M2 RH95 offers 45 gallons rated storage and a 62-gallon first-hour rating in a shorter, wider tank. None of those sizes should be selected from gallon labels alone.

Maintenance and warranty

The series includes a protective tank lining, anode rod, resistored heating elements, sediment-reduction diffuser and brass drain valve. Routine care remains important; these features do not make the heater maintenance-free. WHE considers local water conditions and service access when discussing maintenance.

Rheem lists a six-year limited tank and parts warranty for qualifying single-family installations, subject to the certificate’s conditions and exclusions. The certificate excludes service and installation labor and specifies shorter coverage for other settings. An optional ProtectionPlus tank-warranty extension is not automatically included. WHE confirms pricing, availability and any installation coverage with the estimate.

PROE40 T2 RH95 frequently asked questions

What are the dimensions of the PROE40 T2 RH95?

Rheem lists a 60¾-inch tank height, 19¼-inch diameter and 63⅝-inch height to the water connections. Installation and maintenance require additional space.

Why is the rated capacity 36 gallons?

This is the 40-gallon nominal model, with 36 gallons of rated storage under the manufacturer’s published specifications. Its 55-gallon first-hour rating measures delivery under a standardized test and is a separate number.

Does the tall version deliver more than the 40-gallon medium?

Both models list a 55-gallon first-hour rating, 36 gallons rated storage and 0.93 UEF. The main distinction for this comparison is the tank shape and the available installation space.

Does this electric heater need a flue?

It has no gas burner or combustion exhaust flue. It still needs compatible electrical service, water connections, drainage and service access in accordance with the supplied instructions.

Can it replace my existing 40-gallon tank?

Possibly, but the old and new gallon labels do not prove compatibility. WHE checks dimensions, the actual electrical nameplate, circuit, connections and hot-water demand before confirming a replacement.
