Rheem vs. A.O. Smith Water Heaters: Which Is Better?

Rheem and A.O. Smith both offer water heaters worth considering. The better choice is the specific model that fits your home, supplies enough hot water and comes with the installation and service support you need. A brand name alone does not tell you the tank size, efficiency, warranty or total replacement cost.

If you are comparing Rheem vs. A.O. Smith hot water heaters, start with the same fuel type and similar performance. Water Heating Experts installs both brands. Our Rheem installation page and A.O. Smith installation page explain the options we can help you evaluate.

Standard electric water heaters: compare the actual models

For an existing electric tank replacement, Rheem Professional Classic and A.O. Smith ProLine are useful starting points. Here are two examples from the manufacturers’ current listings:

  • Rheem Professional Classic PROE50 T2 RH95: a nominal 50-gallon tall electric model with a six-year limited tank warranty, six-year limited parts warranty and brass drain valve. See Rheem’s model specifications.
  • A.O. Smith ProLine ENT-50 130: a nominal 50-gallon tall electric model with a six-year limited tank warranty, six-year limited parts warranty and brass drain valve. See A.O. Smith’s model specifications.

These hot water heaters share the same nominal capacity and basic warranty lengths. That does not make them interchangeable. Check the height, diameter, connection locations, element ratings and first-hour rating. The first-hour rating describes how much hot water a fully heated tank can deliver during its first hour of use.

If your current unit runs out during back-to-back showers, replacing it with another 50-gallon tank may not solve the problem. Tell us about simultaneous showers, a large bathtub and other peak demand when discussing electric hot water heater installation.

Gas models: venting and recovery matter

A Rheem or A.O. Smith gas water heater must match the home’s fuel and installation requirements. Natural gas and propane models are different, and atmospheric-vent, power-vent and other configurations have different requirements.

For gas hot water heaters, compare hot-water delivery and recovery along with tank gallons. Also review venting, combustion air, clearances and access for replacement. Switching brands does not remove those installation requirements. Our gas installation service and 75-gallon gas model guide can help you narrow the choices.

Hybrid hot water heaters: Rheem ProTerra vs. A.O. Smith Voltex

Both brands offer heat pump models that use heat from surrounding air to heat the tank. Rheem’s professional ProTerra range and A.O. Smith’s Voltex range are worth comparing when replacing a conventional electric water heater.

Features vary within each family. For example, Rheem lists built-in Wi-Fi and a ten-year limited tank and parts warranty on its Professional Prestige ProTerra with LeakGuard. A.O. Smith lists connected controls, leak detection and ten-year limited tank and parts coverage on its Voltex MAX HPTA-50 210. Confirm whether an automatic shutoff valve is included or an optional accessory on the quoted model.

Compare equivalent capacities, EnergyGuide estimates and first-hour output. An advertised maximum efficiency for one product family is not a fair comparison with a different size or configuration from the other brand.

In Florida, a warm garage can be a good location to evaluate for a hybrid hot water heater. The installation still needs suitable air space, condensate drainage, electrical supply and service clearance. Operating sound matters near bedrooms or living areas. Learn about hybrid and heat pump installation before choosing a model.

Which brand has the better warranty?

A water heater warranty belongs to a particular model and installation. The two standard electric examples above each list six years of limited tank and parts coverage; selected hybrids offer ten years. Those numbers do not mean every repair or replacement expense is covered.

For Rheem, Protection Plus can add four years to the limited tank warranty on eligible units. It must be arranged with the new installation and does not extend parts or labor coverage. Ask us to confirm eligibility before ordering.

For A.O. Smith, check the factory warranty and any extension available for the exact model. Do not assume every ProLine tank qualifies for the same upgrade. Our Rheem hot water heater warranty guide and A.O. Smith warranty guide explain the differences, claim steps and records to keep.

Register your new unit as directed and retain the dated purchase and installation invoice. Proof of installation can matter when establishing the coverage start date under the applicable terms. Water Heating Experts provides Rheem warranty service and can help evaluate coverage questions. Our water heater warranty overview explains how manufacturer coverage differs from installation labor.

Installed cost: compare the complete job

Neither brand is always the less expensive choice. A standard electric tank, a gas model and a hybrid hot water heater can involve very different installation work.

Ask for an estimate that identifies the model and explains removal and disposal, required permits, plumbing connections, electrical or venting work, drain provisions and any expansion control or leak-protection equipment. Compare the installer’s workmanship coverage and the process for future service, too.

Water Heating Experts quotes the proposed equipment and installation together. For an efficiency upgrade, consider operating costs alongside the initial price. The U.S. Department of Energy’s purchasing guidance explains how household hot-water use affects potential energy savings.

Does Rheem or A.O. Smith last longer?

We would not promise a longer life for every Rheem water heater or every A.O. Smith water heater based on the brand name. Installation, water conditions, maintenance and the particular model all matter.

Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions and have developing leaks or performance problems assessed. A longer warranty is a coverage term, not a guaranteed replacement age. Our guide to how long hot water heaters last explains the factors to consider.

What about Home Depot Rheem and Lowe’s A.O. Smith?

Rheem Performance models sold through Home Depot and A.O. Smith Signature models sold through Lowe’s should be compared by their exact specifications. They are different product lines from Rheem Professional and A.O. Smith ProLine.

A retail water heater is not automatically better or worse because of where it is sold. Compare components, dimensions, warranty terms and the complete installation arrangement. Similar appearance or tank capacity does not establish that two models have identical features.

Our Home Depot vs. plumbing contractor comparison discusses the purchasing and installation questions. If you already own a retail hot water heater, keep its model, serial number and receipt handy when asking about warranty service.

Rheem vs. A.O. Smith: common questions

Which water heater brand is better for a Florida home?

Either can be suitable. Start with fuel, available space, hot-water demand and the installation location. For a condo, include association requirements and access restrictions. For a hybrid, review airflow, drainage and sound. Then compare the specific models and service arrangements.

Are two 50-gallon hot water heaters equivalent?

No. Equal nominal tank size does not guarantee equal first-hour delivery, dimensions, efficiency or recovery. Compare the model specifications and ask whether each option meets your household’s peak demand.

Does a ten-year warranty include ten years of free labor?

Not necessarily. Tank, parts and labor can have different terms. Read the manufacturer’s warranty and the installer’s agreement separately, including any charges for diagnosis, removal, installation or required upgrades.

Can WHE help me choose between Rheem and A.O. Smith?

Yes. Send the model label and photos of the full installation, and tell us whether the existing unit meets your needs. We can review suitable options, availability and the work needed for replacement.
