GE GeoSpring Water Heater: Original Model, Support & Replacement
Have an older GE GeoSpring heat-pump water heater or remember the original hybrid models sold through Lowe’s? This Water Heating Experts article began as a real Florida installation: our customer replaced an older 80-gallon conventional electric storage water heater with a GE GeoSpring hybrid unit. We are preserving that job history and original photograph while updating the information on GeoSpring repairs, manufacturer support, newer GeoSpring products and replacement options for today’s homeowners.

Our original GE GeoSpring water heater installation
At the time of the WHE project, the homeowner purchased a GE GeoSpring hybrid water heater from Lowe’s and separately purchased an extended warranty. The heater replaced the old conventional 80-gallon electric tank. The historical article does not identify the precise GeoSpring model or storage capacity, so we do not assume the replacement was also 80 gallons or assign it specifications from a different model.
At the time of that installation, original GeoSpring units were being phased out. The older reference to discounted remaining inventory at Lowe’s is historical, not a statement that those original water heaters are still available there. The owner’s extended warranty was a purchase-specific arrangement; its coverage and status cannot be inferred from the article.
Was GE GeoSpring discontinued? Yes—and later reintroduced under a new name
The original GE-branded GeoSpring line ceased production in January 2017. In January 2017, Bradford White announced an agreement to acquire manufacturing equipment from GE Appliances’ heat-pump water-heater operations; Bradford White also took over service and qualifying warranty responsibilities for eligible older GeoSpring units. That is not the same as every original heater becoming a Bradford White-branded appliance.
Importantly, GE Appliances introduced a new GE Profile GEOSPRING hybrid heat-pump water heater with FlexCAPACITY in June 2025. That modern product generation is distinct from the 2012–2016/early-2017 GeoSpring units. Some individual GE product pages are marked as no longer manufactured, so confirm the precise model and current local availability with GE or a distributor rather than assuming every advertised configuration can be ordered.

Who handles GE GeoSpring warranty and service?
| Heater generation | Who to contact | Official support |
|---|---|---|
| Original GE GeoSpring made before January 2017 | Bradford White GeoSpring support, 888-443-4394 | Legacy GeoSpring service and warranty information |
| GE Profile GEOSPRING made from June 2025 onward | GE Appliances, 800-943-8186 | GE Appliances GeoSpring support by manufacture date |
Read your unit’s model and serial label and locate the original purchase or warranty paperwork before calling. Service availability and warranty coverage depend on the actual heater and its documented terms; no single phone number guarantees a free replacement or that an old repair part remains available. Bradford White’s official parts information says GeoSpring service parts are sold through authorized wholesale distributors.
Common older GeoSpring problems: what to check before replacement
- Heat-pump fault or unusually slow recovery: note the exact error code, the operating mode, ambient conditions and whether backup electric heating is operating as the manufacturer intended.
- Dirty air filter or airflow obstruction: heat pumps need unobstructed air intake and discharge. Follow the model’s published cleaning and clearance instructions rather than bypassing interlocks.
- Condensate leaks: identify whether the water is from the heat-pump drain, a plumbing connection or the storage tank. A blocked condensate route is different from a leaking tank shell.
- Hot-water shortage: consider household peak usage, heating mode, incoming water temperature and model first-hour performance, not just the advertised tank gallon size.
- Age, corrosion or persistent tank leakage: repairs to a compressor or controls may not be cost-effective on an older system. A leaking storage tank generally points toward replacement.
If you smell burning, suspect an electrical fault or see water reaching wiring or controls, stop using the equipment if it is safe to do so and call qualified service. Water heater electrical work, refrigerant-system service and pressurized plumbing should not be presented as a universal do-it-yourself project.
What can replace an old GE GeoSpring in 2026?
The right replacement may be a current hybrid heat-pump water heater from Bradford White, Rheem, A.O. Smith or another suitable manufacturer. Bradford White’s AeroTherm heat-pump families include 50-, 65- and 80-gallon choices, but the specific first-hour rating, rated storage, electrical requirements, air clearances and price vary by model. GE’s newer Profile GEOSPRING can also be investigated where the precise model is actually available. We do not claim that WHE stocks every listed brand or product configuration.
A homeowner replacing an older unit should first compare usable hot-water demand, access and available space. An original 80-gallon electric resistance tank should not automatically be replaced by a 50-gallon hybrid merely because a marketing comparison suggests equivalent hot-water delivery under certain test conditions. For a large household, see 80-Gallon Water Heater Replacement Options and Large Residential Electric Water Heater Sizes.
Why a Florida garage can work for a heat-pump water heater
Heat-pump water heaters collect warmth from surrounding air and can use less electricity than conventional electric-resistance water heaters in suitable conditions. A warm Florida garage may provide a useful source of heat, but installation still requires the manufacturer-specified airflow, access, electrical supply and condensate drainage. Cooler air leaving the unit may be noticeable in the garage; that does not make it a substitute for an air-conditioning system.
We check whether the heater will physically fit, whether its air intake and exhaust have room to work correctly, where condensate can drain, and whether the electric circuit is suitable. ENERGY STAR has helpful heat-pump water heater installation guidance. For this article’s historical installation, we cannot validate every component or clearance from one photograph alone.
A separate, more recent WHE hybrid installation

This is a real WHE Bradford White AeroTherm installation with a tank booster, expansion tank and copper piping. It demonstrates the types of professional installations we perform now; it is not a GeoSpring repair, nor evidence that every replacement needs identical components. We frequently use rigid copper and press fittings where appropriate, but each installation must follow the exact equipment instructions and local requirements.
How much money can a hybrid heat-pump water heater save?
Savings depend on the old heater’s energy use, utility rates, water use, selected hybrid mode, garage temperatures and the new model’s efficiency. We have therefore removed the original article’s blanket claim of $400 in annual savings. Ask for a comparison using your actual electricity price and the specific heater. ENERGY STAR’s guidance can help explain efficiency and sizing, but advertised savings are not a promise of results in every home.
Frequently asked questions about GE GeoSpring
Is GE GeoSpring still made?
The original GE-branded GeoSpring line ended production in January 2017. GE Appliances introduced a separate, new GE Profile GEOSPRING line in 2025. Verify current production and availability by individual model; do not confuse the two generations.
Did Bradford White buy GeoSpring?
Bradford White acquired manufacturing assets from GE Appliances’ heat-pump water heater operations in 2017 and took over support for qualifying legacy GeoSpring units. That does not mean Bradford White is responsible for the newer GE Profile GEOSPRING models launched in 2025.
Who do I call about a GE GeoSpring water heater warranty?
For qualifying original pre-2017 GE GeoSpring units, Bradford White provides support at 888-443-4394. For the newer GE Profile GEOSPRING generation, GE Appliances lists 800-943-8186. Confirm your model and manufacturing date first.
Can an older GE GeoSpring heat-pump unit be repaired?
Some problems may be serviceable, but repairability depends on the failure, exact model, condition, parts availability and overall age. A qualified professional should diagnose the problem before estimating whether repair or replacement makes sense.
What is the best replacement for an old 80-gallon electric water heater?
Start with first-hour demand, available space and the exact existing model. Modern 65- and 80-gallon heat-pump options may be worth comparing, but a smaller tank does not automatically match the old tank’s peak delivery.
Is the new GE Profile GEOSPRING the same as the older model sold at Lowe’s?
No. The original Lowe’s unit in this WHE story belongs to the older GE GeoSpring era. The newer GE Profile GEOSPRING introduced in 2025 includes newer configurations and features and has different support contacts.
Does a heat-pump water heater need a condensate drain?
Yes. Heat-pump operation produces condensate that needs a suitable drain or approved condensate pump. Check the manufacturer’s installation manual and keep the drainage route serviceable.
Are $400 annual electric savings guaranteed?
No. The amount varies with electricity rates, usage, climate, existing equipment and the specific new unit. Use model-specific efficiency and real household conditions rather than assuming a fixed savings number.
